Ahh, the early 2000s. MTV was the station to watch and you’d likely catch episodes of shows like “Newlyweds” starring singer Jessica Simpson and boy-bander Nick Lachey. The reality series, which delved into the relationship between the two singers premiered on August 19, 2003, and ran for three seasons in total. Simpson and Lachey were married less than a year earlier than the premiere and divorced just nine months after the show concluded in March 2005. But one might ask the obvious question, does Simpson regret the show and did it take a toll on her marriage to Lachey?

According to the 39-year-old singer and fashion designer, there are no regrets about filming the reality show. While Simpson made an appearance on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show, “On Air! With Ryan Seacrest, she opened up about her feelings regarding the reality show. Simpson said, “We were newlyweds. It was our first time even living together. I was a virgin.” Simpson revealed that it was her dad Joe Simpson who had the idea for the couple to be on the reality show in the first place. Joe was formerly Simpson’s manager for quite some time during her career.

Simpson recalled dad Joe telling her, "I really want people to understand you and know that you're human.” While Simpson was only 22-years-old at the time of filming, she quickly became a household name for those who didn’t already known her. Simpson credits the reality show for officially launching her career into stardom, though. She told Seacrest that the show “launched my brand. Absolutely I would go back and do it all over again. It's never something I wouldn't do again, I just, you know, maybe wouldn't have done a third season."

Simpson recalled watching episodes of the show, especially toward the end of the show and recognized the tension between her and her husband at the time. Simpson told Hota Kotb on NBC’s Today "I would watch episodes back and I didn't like what I saw. I saw what people were laughing at, but I also saw a lot of eye-rolling and that wasn't just editing.” Simpson went further into detail about the deterioration of her marriage in her recent memoir Open Book.

It wasn’t until cameras stopped rolling that Simpson recognized something was wrong. She wrote in her memoir, “We were young and pioneering our way through reality television, always mic'd and always on. We worked and we were great at it but when it came time to being alone, we weren’t great at it anymore.” While things didn’t work out for Simpson and Lachey, each went their own separate ways and remarried. Simpson is now wife to former NFL player Eric Johnson, meanwhile, Lachey married former Miss Teen USA and television personality Vanessa Minnillo.
