A lot has happened since Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton last saw each other in public. Prince Harry and Markle have decided to step back from their duties as royals and announced that decision to the world.

Before they could officially step back, though, they had to wrap up their duties as members of the royal family. On Monday, they did just that, attending their final royal event before they transition out of their roles as members of the royal family.

Harry and Meghan attended the Commonwealth Day service along with Prince William and Kate Middleton. When Meghan saw Kate, she offered the Duchess of Cambridge a small wave and seemed to mouth "hello." Harry also seemed to say "hello" and smile at his brother before taking a seat next to his wife.

Sophie Wessex, who was sitting behind Kate, then leaned over to talk with her. Harry and Meghan, meanwhile, began a conversation with Prince Edward after arriving at the service.

At last year's service, Meghan and Kate greeted each other with a kiss on the cheek. This year, they seemed to be going for something slightly more reserved. The couples were also shown to their seats this year instead of walking in behind the queen, as was the case last year.

There have been rumors of a rift between the two couples for more than a year now. Some reports even suggested that William and Kate were angry over Harry and Meghan's decision to step back.

After Harry and Meghan released an announcement saying that they'd be stepping back as members of the royal family, reporting suggested that William and his father Prince Charles were both furious over the matter.

“This is a declaration of war on the family,” a source told The Sun. While that may be a dramatic description, it seems that Harry and Meghan did work outside royal protocols to make the announcement public. They may have been looking to force the royal family's hand.

“Their statement was not cleared with anyone. It breaks all protocol," the source continued. "There is fury over how they’ve done this without any thought for the implications for the institution. The Queen is deeply upset. The Prince of Wales and Duke of Cambridge are incandescent with rage.”

It may have harmed his relationship with his brother, but Harry clearly wanted to begin the process of separation rapidly. “Harry and Meghan wanted it their way or the highway," the source ultimately concluded.
