March 7, 2020, is a day that is important if you are a fan of Dwyane Wade, Gabrielle Union, or their daughter Zaya. That day marks the first public appearance of Zaya Wade after she came out as transgender. It wasn't just her first public appearance though. It also happened to be her first ever red carpet.

Talk about some nerves. However, Zaya had the support of her parents as she took the first steps onto the red carpet. Probably one of many now.

Where were the trio headed? They were headed to the 6th annual Truth Awards. This specific event honors the LGBTQ+ community with celebrations of achievements. The event is something that is welcoming to people that are part of the community and the allies.

This is a huge event and the trio were dressed to impress. The whole family had outfits that matched one another. They each had a key color and Zaya's was a green blazer and button down. Add in pink on the pants and it was a good outcome.

Both Dwayne and Gabrielle took to the stage at the event. Gabrielle was met with applause and an overcoming sense of being welcomed. She was the first to speak of the family.

“Real allies actually show up,” she said on stage while being met with cheers. “It goes beyond tweets and retweets and a check here and there. You actually need to show up and you got to be on the front lines and you got to show what leadership actually looks like.”

Dwyane was next. He admitted that when Zaya came to them he didn't know anything about the LGBTQ+ community. He turned to friends and wanted to learn about it. He was learning and wanting to make sure that his daughter had a safe place.

He actually redid her room with her in the way that she wanted. Dwyane wanted his daughter to have this safe place to go to. He wanted her to know that he was always going to be in her corner.

Zaya has the support of her family no matter what. When Dwyane was on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in February, he spoke about his daughter.

“We are proud parents of a child in the LGBTQ+ community,” Dwyane told Ellen in his interview. “We’re proud allies, as well. We take our roles and responsibility as parents very seriously. So when our child comes home with a question or an issue or anything, it’s our job as parents to listen and give them the best information and feedback that we can. That doesn’t change because sexuality is involved with it." He knew there was learning to be done and he went into it. With an open heart and open mind to learn for his daughter.
