On March 7th, Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union stood by Zaya Wade's side as she made her first debut at the 6th annual Truth Awards since coming out as transgender. The family stunned in color coordinated suits as they rallied together in support of the LGBTQ+ community. On Instagram, Dwyane shared a fierce photo of his daughter and wrote, "Everyone allow her to re-introduce herself her name is Zaya Wade! Last night was Zaya’s first red carpet and we couldn’t have been prouder of how she handled the questions that were asked of her. She has emerged as one of the young faces and voices for the LGBTQ+ community. #truthawards"

Union also pumped up her stepdaughter on social media, writing, "Big night at the #TruthAwards2020 to celebrate our friends @jasonbolden @adair_curtis receiving the Business Leadership Award. We are incredibly proud of them and grateful for their presence, love & light in ourselves. @richfresh kept us FRESHHHHH in custom suits and @lorraineschwartz laced us with gorgeous jewels for the special occasion. It was an EPIC night filled with so much love & a real sense of community. It was important for Zaya to be a part of such a beautiful night & reminding her of all the love & support she has. We were moved to tears so many times throughout the night. So much gratitude ❤"

The family even took the stage at the event, sharing some important and inspiring words the crowd. While at the stand, Union said, "Real allies actually show up...It goes beyond tweets and retweets and a check here and there. You actually need to show up and you got to be on the front lines and you got to show what leadership actually looks like." Her words were met with cheers from the crowd. Zaya's father also took a moment to talk about his own experience with his child coming out.

Dwyane explained that at first, he was not educated on the community, but that Zaya has helped to teach both him and Union so much. He also explained how he has since attempted to assist Zaya in any way possible so that she feels comfortable and supported. Back in February, while a guest on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show", Dwyane opened up about Zaya and confirmed her identity as transgener. "We are proud parents of a child in the LGBTQ+ community...We’re proud allies, as well," he said.

"We take our roles and responsibility as parents very seriously," Dwyane continued. "So when our child comes home with a question or an issue or anything, it’s our job as parents to listen and give them the best information and feedback that we can. That doesn’t change because sexuality is involved with it. Once Zaya, our 12-year-old, came home — originally Zion, born as a boy — and said, ‘Hey, I want to talk to you guys, I think going forward I’m ready to live my truth. I want to be referenced as she and her. I would love for you guys to call me Zaya.’ Internally, it’s now our job to go out and get information."
