It’s been 30 years since Earvin “Magic” Johnson announced he had been diagnosed with the HIV virus. At the time of the diagnosis life expectancy for people like Magic wasn’t overly high. Doctors and scientists had a rough time finding ways to treat the virus right around the time that Magic contracted it. Days after Magic’s announcement, the great Freddie Mercury would die from essentially the same disease. However, Johnson has found a way to live essentially a normal life while being diagnosed as HIV positive. His diagnosis is widely regarded as a turning point on the stigma that people with the disease suffered. Now, 30 years on Magic thanks God for the opportunity to still be around. In the most Magic way of all, he’s turning tragedy into big bucks with an upcoming Apple TV+ docuseries.
How Has Magic Been Able To Beat HIV?
This is one of the questions that a lot of people have wanted to know for years. The true answer is that no one knows for sure. Magic himself hasn’t been terribly forthcoming when it comes to talking about the type of treatment that he takes. What people have always believed has been the key for Magic Johnson has been the fact that his HIV positive status has never developed into full-blown aids. According to researchers people who are HIV positive, but never develop the “aids” disease have been known to live long and healthy lives. Even folks who contracted the disease back in the 80s when it was thought to be a death sentence.
Magic Johnson Talking About Living Through Affliction
As we’ve mentioned Sunday marked the 30-year anniversary of the infamous Magic Johnson press conference when he announced that he had contracted the virus. At the time Johnson mentioned, “Life is going to go on for me, and I’m going to be a happy man,” 30 years on, healthy and with millions upon millions in the bank it would seem Magic’s premonition came true. He took to Twitter to talk about 30 years living with the disease over the weekend saying,
“God has really blessed me! Today marks 30 years living with HIV so the message resonated with me in such a tremendous way. I thank the Lord for keeping me, giving me strength, and guiding me for 62 years but especially the last 30.”
Getting Ready To Promote A New Docuseries For Apple TV +
Magic Johnson is now getting ready to promote a biopic that will air on Apple TV+. No release date has been set for the series on the platform. However, some pretty noteworthy names are reportedly tied into the project. You wouldn’t expect less for a Magic Johnson production. Rick Famuyiwa is reportedly going to be directing the series with Dirk Westervelt known for Ford v Ferrari in editing. Finally, Rachel Morrison from Blank Panther is going to be in charge of cinematography. Certainly the HIV battle is set to be front and center in Magic Johnson’s story. There are plenty of other things to talk about when it comes to Magic though. His success on the basketball court and in business is undeniable!
