We are living in an era of untruths…an era of fake-no fake news. A strange time in our history when seeing is not believing and we don’t always know whether or not the source of our information is reliable.
It is during these times that conspiracy theories and just plain wacky ideas come out of the woodwork. The earth is flat. The U.S.was responsible for the 9/11 tragedy. Illuminati. The Sandy Hook conspiracy. The Jeffrey Epstein conspiracies. The sky is falling.
When conspiracy theories are around for a long time they take on a life of their own. When they first come out, the very ideas behind them are shocking…unbelievable…such as:
The Corona Virus is a Hoax.
The World Health Organization (WHO) put out this statement: “At WHO, we’re not just battling the virus, we’re also battling the trolls and conspiracy theorists that push misinformation and undermine the outbreak response.”
Twenty-seven scientists recently put out this statement in an open letter stating that theories suggesting COVID-19 does not have a natural origin do “nothing but create fear, rumors, and prejudice that jeopardize our global collaboration in the fight against this virus.”
“An outbreak like this has many uncertainties, and when people don’t have answers, and scientists are not able to give them all the answers and assurances they need, they are likely to start speculating.” This quote is from Marina Joubert, a senior science communication researcher based in Stellenbosch, South Africa.
You might say it’s understandable to be afraid – people wearing masks, deserted stadiums, and deserted cities.
Of course there is this 21st century notion of “I saw it on the Internet…so it must be true.
Here’s a sampling from a “video” on YouTube that describes some of the conspiracies based on the idea that the number 400 constantly appears everywhere when the Covid-19 virus is discussed.
I believe this “400 scam” is proving that all the major countries are in bed together just playing to be enemies
20 times 20 equals 400 in this year of 2020
The sun (Corona) is supposed to exactly 400 x bigger than the moon
Wuhan-400 is the fake disease in the Dean Koontz novel…perfect for the fake “novel” coronavirus.
Newsweek posted: “Coronavirus Reddit Page Becomes Fastest Growing Subreddit With Almost 400,000 New Users In A Week”
Donald Trump has just donated his salary to help the fight against coronavirus $400,000!
Scientists believe bats are a carrier for the new virus, and they suspect it may have jumped to humans via another animal host. The bat soup claim is just one of the many ideas linking what Chinese people eat to the new outbreak, and one among many peddling racially charged claims.
Andrea Kitta, assistant professor at East Carolina University in the US, said “Some of the stereotypes that have emerged are that Chinese people are ‘dirty’ and that they eat weird things. When we don’t have the information we need, we tend to speculate, but unfortunately, that’s also where our inherent racism and bias starts to come into play.”
Conspiracy theories are not just for the average Joe on the street. The Washington Times stated that the new coronavirus may have come from a lab linked to China’s “covert biological weapons program,” a theory later backed by Republican Senator Tom Cotton.
And from Rush Limbaugh, who was recently awarded the Medal of Freedom: “The coronavirus is being weaponized as yet another element to bring down Donald Trump.”
In China, writers at popular outlets on WeChat laid out how the U.S. military could have deployed the pathogen as a clandestine bio-weapon during a trip to Wuhan in October.
It’s difficult to keep writing about this while keeping one’s hands on the keyboard. So, for more fun, go onto the Internet and type in: ‘coronavirus conspiracy theories.’ Enjoy.
