Demi Lovato Tells Justin Bieber She Looked to Him For Inspiration During Her Struggles

In a recent installment of the Ellen Degeneres Show, the host allowed for the international pop sensation, Demi Lovato, to fill in for her while she hosted Justin Bieber.

During the program, the two spoke about a myriad of topics including both of their struggles with mental health and fighting through the gauntlet that is the 'entertainment industry', among others.

During the show, though, Lovato opened up about how she looked to Bieber for inspiration during some of her darkest moments when she was struggling and subsequently overdosed.

While many of the problems that Bieber has experienced were recently documented on the YouTube docuseries 'Justin Bieber: Seasons', the singer felt compelled to share those stories with Lovato during his time on the show. For Bieber, opening up and sharing those vulnerabilities was seen to him as a way to inspire others.

"I think the more mature you become, the more you understand that there’s power in your weakness," Bieber told Lovato. That power is to show other people that it's okay to have problems and admit that you're struggling.

'And When You're Able to Show That, It Gives Other People Confidence'

"And when you’re able to show that, it gives other people the confidence to say, ‘You know what? I’m going through similar things myself, it might not be the exact same thing, but I’m going through something too and I’ve been hiding it," the 'Love Yourself' singer continued.

"Just having the confidence, and being able to instill that confidence in young people that it’s okay to have problems, you don’t have to hide that … I just feel like if we’re open and honest about that, it creates a dialogue."

Lovato Shares with Bieber That He Was an Inspiration During Her Struggles

Lovato, who incidentally dropped her latest single, 'I Love Me' shared that she was personally inspired by Bieber's take on being vulnerable and letting people know that it's not a bad thing to struggle sometimes. She said that it helped her out when she was at her lowest point in life.

"Just for me and my experience, when I struggled last year, I know I looked at you as an inspiration because you’ve been through this and you’ve come out of the other side," she said to Bieber. "And I really just admire the man that you are today."

Bieber and Lovato Reminisce About the Day They First Met at a Radio Station

Later in the episode, the two recalled the first time that they met at a radio station years before. "So I was on tour — I was about 16 I think, and I want to say you were 14 — and you were outside of a radio station," Lovato said.

"I was doing an interview that day. You came up to me and you just ran up and was like, 'Can I have a picture?' And I was like, 'Yeah, for sure.' You were like, 'My name’s Justin. I’m Justin Bieber, you’re gonna know my name one day.' And I was like, 'Wow okay cool, for sure,' and then I definitely did!" Lovato concluded.
