Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez have had a rocky friendship over the years. The two met when they were kids while filming Barny and Friends.
“She [Selena Gomez] and Demi were auditioning for the same things because they were the same age, they were both Hispanic, they both had dark hair — so she ended up going to a lot of auditions with us,” Lovato’s mom, Dianna De La Garza, told People.
“They started out together! We had some great times together. They will always will love each other. There’s nothing that will ever come between them.”
Lovato and Gomez were pretty much inseparable. They even starred in the 2008 Disney movie, Princess Protection Program together.
Unfortunately, things took a turn. In January 2010, there were rumors of a feud. This was around the time Gomez befriended Taylor Swift and Lovato befriended Miley Cyrus.
That year, Demi admitted she and Selena had grown apart. But a few months later, Lovato made headlines after checking herself into rehab.
When speaking about the experience, Demi revealed Selena was one of the first people to reach out while she was in rehab.
After Demi came out of rehab in 2013, her relationship with Selena improved. The pair even walked the red carpet together during the Teen Choice Awards.
In May, Lovato spoke about her relationship with Selena saying, “We’ve been through a lot together, we’ve had periods of times where we grew apart and we just didn’t really talk.”
Lovato continued, “Now we are in a place where I think we realized that life is so short and that when you have people in your life that love you so much then, you should just always be around them.”
Their relationship was good for most of 2013. But in 2014, Demi unfollowed Selena from Instagram and Twitter.
They rekindled their friendship in 2015 when Demi re-followed Selena and Selena wished her a very public happy birthday.
In 2017, the ladies constantly complimented the other during interviews, and things seemed good. But in 2018, following Demi’s overdose, she unfollowed Gomez. But it wasn’t just Selena, Demi unfollowed Nick Jonas and Iggy Azalea.
According to Entertainment Tonight, Lovato made this decision to “avoid any difficult relationships.”
Selena supported Demi after her Grammy performance by sharing a screenshot with the caption:
“I wish there were words to describe how beautiful, inspirational and DESERVED this moment was. Demi I’m so happy for you. Thank you for your courage and bravery.”
Even with this public comment, we’re not exactly sure where the two currently stand. Especially given Demi’s close relationship with Justin Bieber and Scooter Bruan.
Both Demi and Bieber are represented by Scooter Braun. Bruan has been in a public feud with Taylor Swift since 2019. And since Taylor and Selena are BFFS, there might be even more tension between Gomez and Lovato now, than there was in the past.
But even if they’re not currently friends, chances are they’ll rekindle their relationship one day.
