Kaley said this in reaction to getting the new role, ‘I didn’t specifically need it to be different from Penny. If it was going to be, then it was and that would be great, and if not that was fine too. When Peter called, I was still shooting Big Bang. I was actually doing it while we were doing Big Bang so this was just a great addition.’
It’s honestly difficult to think of anyone other than Penny when one sees Kaley’s photo. She was Penny for so many years, and that is how many people have grown to be fans of her work.
However, the new role does make more sense than may be initially thought. On ‘The Big Bang Theory,’ Penny eventually dates Leonard, a nerd. Actually, calling Leonard a nerd is an understatement. Sheldon, Raj, Howard, and Leonard collectively make up a King of the Nerds.
It would make logical sense that after playing the part of a nerd’s girlfriend, fiance, and then wife for so many years, she would get the part of voicing Harley Quinn. I mean the two may have had nothing to do with each other, but still, maybe they do.
Kaley told ‘Entertainment Weekly,’ ‘ That is pretty cool, right? What would the guys think? Penny turned into exactly who they wanted her to be. Big Bang was an unforgettable 12 years, I’ll owe my entire career to that show and getting me out there. It’s set in my heart.’
See, even Kaley realizes how much ‘The Big Bang Theory’ catapulted her career into what it is today.
Taking on the role of an animated character that has been portrayed by other actresses is different than her role as Penny.
In commenting on this difference, Kaley said, ‘There have been so many Harley Quinns, and obviously with ‘Suicide Squad’ Margot was playing her so incredibly well and so specific, that I didn’t want her to sound like anybody else.’
Still, with Kaley unable to disguise her voice enough to make fans think she wasn’t the new voice of Harley, those behind the show all agreed that Kaley should sound like Kaley.
Now, why does Kaley say that Harley Quinn represents women? According to her, women almost need to be an ‘antihero’ to ‘deal with bad relationships.’
Kaley went on to say, ‘Getting away from a bad relationship and having your friends around you to make you feel powerful and believe in yourself, that’s like feminism at its core.’
So, in society women must be a little like Harley Quinn to combat the abuse that happens in bad relationships? That seems to be at least one of Kaley’s points.
Kaley described Harley Quinn with, ‘She’s strong, she’s quirky, she’s fun, and absolutely adorable.’
While it may not be possible to be Harley Quinn unless you’re Kaley, it is possible to be more of an ‘antihero.’ This seems to be Kaley’s message.
