Since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced that they would be “stepping back” from their duties with the royal family, it took no time for the naysayers to emerge and express their dissatisfaction with the decision. Even now, after beginning their new path to the future, critics are doubting whether or not the couple can survive financially.
It’s a well-known fact that Meghan was an actress before she even met Harry, so it’s natural to conclude that she could get back on the Hollywood horse and look for acting opportunities. Apparently, Nick Collins, her Hollywood agent, already has some irons in the fire for Meghan’s acting career.
Who could be upset with the couple wanting to create a life of their own? Some people never liked the idea in the first place, saying that it was a sign of disrespect to the royal family. British taxpayers complained that they already poured tons of money into the Sussexes’ kitty. The two of them have been under the microscope from day one, and as a controversial couple, there is seemingly no end to the negative comments that people can dream up. Some like to split hairs – pointing out that surviving financially is one thing – but living in the means to which they are accustomed to (read a more lavish lifestyle) – is quite another.
Any successful marketer will tell you that brand recognition is difficult to achieve but vitally important to a product, even if the product, in this case, is the couple themselves. They will have no problem with brand recognition and already have a leg up in any venture they choose to undertake. Meghan already has a voice-over role at Disney, and CEO Bob Iger has already met with Harry. And how easy do you think it is for you or me to take a meeting with Bob Iger?
Some argue that as a royal, Meghan will always be perceived as such, and therefore find it difficult to find gigs. That’s nonsense, folks. It’s called line extension. You take the brand and expand it into other areas, and demonstrate that it can be successful there as well.
Some people understand the dynamics of the royal split and some don’t. For example, whereas Piers Morgan called the separation a waste of taxpayer money, Bette Midler understood how the couple were hounded by a critical press and by a royal family that was set in their ways.
Meghan Markle will have no problem jump-starting her career again. She will assuredly get more voice-over work. She will graduate into some acting roles – not necessarily as the leading lady – but she’ll be appreciated just the same. The acting roles will become more significant and visible as time goes on.
Prince Harry will have lots of options. He may take on a role as a producer of film or television projects. He could easily start out in the documentary space (as did the Obamas) and take on subjects dear to his heart. He could play a supporting role in Meghan’s acting career. There could initially be spoken word projects by Harry and later on there could be feature films from Meghan.
Let the doubters doubt all they want. It is highly doubtful that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will be doomed to a life of poverty, or even a life of barely surviving. The journey is just beginning, and they will surely find a lot of sunshine further down the road.
