Spider-Man is a Marvel character that’s been rebooted and rebranded several times, every time hiring new actors to play the nerdy hero. It’s become a prestigious institution in the role itself, giving these young actors platforms for their careers, access to resources provided by Sony or Marvel Studios.
After playing Spider-Man, these actors have gone on to do other great roles, or if still playing him, have started production on lucrative projects. Here are those actors who have portrayed the web slinger.
Tom Holland is one of the newest and current actor playing Spider-Man, having starred in “Spider-Man: Homecoming”, “Spider-Man: Far From Home”, and several other “Avengers” films. Holland’s strength is that his version got to crossover into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and meet the other superheroes of that world.
Moreover, some fans say he is one of the best portrayals of Spider-Man, the honesty of his youth and naivety garnering sympathy from fans. The tale focuses on him being an overwhelmed teenager.
Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man was very angsty and emphasized more than anything about his loss of childhood through tragedy and chaos. His films were titled “The Amazing Spider-Man” franchise and included Gwen Stacy, played by Emma Stone, as the main love interest.
Garfield’s Spider-Man franchise was shut down, some speculation suggests because he wanted his version to be bisexual and have a male love interest in future films. Since then, Garfield has been in films like “Hacksaw Ridge” and “Under The Silver Lake”.
Shameik Moore is the first African-American man to play and voiceover for Spider-Man, his version named Miles Morales instead of Peter Parker. “Into The Spider-Verse” was a revolutionary animated film that took home the Academy Award for being the best hit that year.
Prior to the film, Moore had already made a name for himself in films like “Dope” and shows like Netflix’s “The Get Down”. Moore is also set to reprise his role in the animated film’s sequel coming out in 2022.
Toby Maguire was the first of many large Spider-Man franchise castings, leading the way for his descendants. Without the extraordinary success of his version, there would be no more Spider-Men. Although many fans suggest his “Spider-Man 3” was so bad it almost did ruin everything. His film franchise had flaws but it’s a precious time in Spider-Man’s filmography too.
Maguire has since starred in classic films like “The Great Gatsby” alongside longtime best friend Leonardo Dicaprio, and others like “Brothers” or “Pleasantville”.
