We know he is just an ‘Icon’ living, but rapper Jaden Smith, is more of a super hero to the residents of Flint, Michigan, who need clean water.
In 2014, Flint experienced a water crisis when a corrosion control agent designed to combat lead, failed to be implemented into pipelines after the city changed to sourcing from the river, according CNN.
The crisis caused a dramatic change in the water quality as lead deposits were at dangerous levels. Residents reported brown water with poor smell and taste.
Flint continued to experience issues with water quality through the remainder of 2014.
The city publicly announced in August, that water had fecal coliform bacterium in it warranting a boil advisory, according to CNN.
By September the EPA determined that the water had tested positive for ‘total coliform bacteria.’ According to the EPA, “The presence of this type of bacteria is a warning sign that E. coli or other disease-causing organisms may be contaminating the water.”
Sadly that hasn’t been the last of Flint’s trouble with water.
Over the course of the last five years, Flint has continuously undergone issues with their water quality, prompting action from those taking notice to what was called by Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, “the worst man-made environmental disasters in U.S. history,” according to ABC news.
With water unsafe for consumption, Jaden was sparked to action.
A natural philanthropist at heart, Jaden who has publicly shared his concern for the destruction of the planet decided help Flint citizens with an innovative plan of action.
Water boxes, born of Jaden’s technology and sanitation ideas, allow Flint Citizens to clean and filter their water at incredibly fast rates.
Jaden is currently partnering with several projects to bring mass awareness to the issues surrounding access to clean water.
At this time there are a total of four water boxes available to citizens in flint, and the city couldn’t be more thankful.
Jaden is also working with the movement, Kind Humans to inspire even more innovative actions that can help people all over the world.
Jaden Smith is an excellent role model for his generation as he continues making strides toward better choices and sustainability.
Sponsors of the Kind Humans movement had this to say about the contributions Jaden has made,
