Last year was an amazing year for fans of the horror genre, we got to see continuations of some of our favorite series in 'It: Chapter Two', 'Annabelle: Comes Home', and 'Doctor Sleep', but we also got to see spectacular original horror films like 'Midsommar', 'Us', and 'Crawl'.

Horror fans should be excited to know that this year won't be much different, there are a lot of original horror films on the slate for 2020 that are getting people buzzing already, in addition to some new installments to some of our favorite series.

Let's dive into what we have to look forward to in horror for this year.

Sequels, Sequels Everywhere

'A Quiet Place' took horror fans by storm in 2018, I don't think I've ever been in a quieter movie theater than when I was at the premiere for this alien-flick. With a rotten tomatoes score of 95% and a box office of over $340 million dollars, it was only a matter of time before we got a sequel, and lucky for us, we'll be getting 'A Quiet Place 2' on May 15th of this year.

Both John Krasinki and Emily Blunt are set to return, and the trailers that have been released so far are downright terrifying.

The Conjuring universe now spans seven films including the first two Conjuring installments, 'Annabelle', 'The Nun', and 'The Curse of La Llorona'.

The producers seem to have no intention of slowing down as the next installment 'The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It', is set to release in September of this year.

The most impressive thing about these films is just how much freedom the producers allow the directors to insert their own styles and themes.

A great example of this is seeing the differences between the original 'Annabelle' and the sequel 'Annabelle: Creation' while having similar themes the films are vastly different but still contain those undertones that keep the Conjuring universe connected.

Fans of Michael Myers will be happy to know that the masked killer will be returning this Halloween in the sequel 'Halloween Kills'.

The Halloween reboot released in 2018 was released to massively positive reviews and raked in over $250 million dollars at the box office on a budget of just $10 million.

Universal Pictures isn't gonna let a cash cow like that sit around for too long, just two short years later and we'll get to see our favorite pair of siblings battle it out again.

Other horror sequels arriving this year include: 'The Purge 5' which will be released in July. 'Escape Room 2' will be released in August, and Marvel's much-awaited horror X-Men film 'The New Mutants' after several delays will finally be released in April.

The Originals are Coming...

What's even more exciting for horror fans besides horror sequels? Horror originals and thanks to auteurs like Jordan Peele, we'll see new/original iterations of horror in abundance this year, including his reboot of the classic urban horror film 'Candyman'.

What is even more interesting are the films we know are coming, but we don't know much about yet, like the thriller 'Antebellum' which apparently sees a modern black woman taken back in time to the slavery era, which comes out in April.

Or the Scott Cooper vehicle 'Antlers', also coming in April, in which all we know is that there is a "mysterious creature" in a small Oregon town.

Other new horror films, we're excited for despite not knowing much about their plots are 'Malignant' directed by horror master James Wan. 'False-Positive' which stars 'Broad City' comedienne Ilana Glazer. And 'Last Night in Soho' directed by 'Baby Driver's' Edgar Wright.

We hope you all are as excited about these new horror flicks as we are!
