Has the 'Teen Mom' Franchise Finally Met Its End?

By meghanpeper

In June of 2009, MTV launched a new series called 16 and Pregnant. The docuseries would follow pregnant teen age girls as they navigated life before, during, and after the birth of their first children. In it's first season we saw the stories of the first four OG moms; Maci, Farrah, Catelynn, and Amber; amongst a handful of other moms who never made a return to MTV.

The popularity of the show was far beyond what any executive at MTV could have predicted at the time and a spin-off was optioned and filmed.

Teen Mom would premier just six months later, in December of 2009, following four of the girls from 16 and Pregnant; Maci, Catelynn, Farrah, and Amber; on the journey that would be their first year of parenting.

The show would focus on the hardships the girls faced as young mothers, facing a world with often deluded expectations and little to no money. It was a peak into a life some people knew all too well, and some feared with every fiber of their being.

The tumultuous path the moms had walked had people invested.

Maci was a driven student who missed her life as a cheerleader, having to graduate early to make house with the father of her child, Ryan. Maci and Ryan shared a son in Bentley, and as fans will tell you, their road to the current day has not been an easy one. With Ryan's history of drug problems, Maci and Bentley had a rough go at it. The couple broke up early on in the series, but Ryan remains a mainstay of the show.

Amber Portwood has had her fair share of trouble while filming Teen Mom OG as well. Though this time, she was the one in the hot seat. Amber was caught abusing the father of her child, Gary, on camera, while filming for the show. Amber was later found guilty of assault and time in prison for her misdeeds.

Farrah is the OG Teen Mom everyone loves to hate-which could be sad if she didn't make it so easy. Farrah was notoriously hard to work with and eventually became the first mom to leave the show to pursue other options. She now travels with her daughter, Sofia, homeschooling the young girl and leaving many to wonder if the 10 year-old will ever get to live a "normal" life.

Catelynn's story is one of the more tragic in the world of Teen Mom. She and her high school boyfriend gave their expected child up for adoption, and in a crazy turn of events, ended up staying together, getting married, and having two more children many years later.

Through the ups and downs of life as teen moms, Maci, Amber, Catelynn, and Farrah suddenly found themselves catapulted into reality TV stardom, receiving larger and larger checks from MTV, and stepping into a life and lifestyle that was totally unexpected...not to mention a complete contrast to the life of most every other teenage parent.

With money from MTV funneling in, the show itself began to take a drastic turn. When the show started the message was meant to prove how hard it is to be a teenage mother, and in turn with its popularity, the message became, in part, "if you get pregnant, maybe you can become rich and famous too!" This has left fans wondering if the show has jumped the shark. Before the days of MTV and SponCon via Instagram, this was a show about struggling mothers, making ends meet. It's a catch-22 of sorts, because the mom's jobs have become the show and they should be fairly compensated for that.

The addition of a major income for each girl played a major role in changing the shows structure, leaving many to wonder if there is still a story left to be told here. Rumors have circled that the show is on the verge of cancellation, though no official announcement has been made.

Season 8 premiers March 17th.
