Niecy Nash (born Carol Denise Nash) is giving the world something to talk about this past week. On Monday, Feb 22, the Claws Claws Claws star bore it all in a bare, bold and brazen photoshoot she posed for to commemorate her 50th birthday that she posted on Instagram accompanied by a snippet of Maya Angelou’s, Phenomenal Woman poem.
“I was coming up on my 50th trip around the sun, and I was like, ‘We need to document this,’” she told People. “I want to take some pictures and really cement this occasion.”
Redefining the meaning of self-expression, NashNashNash, 50, stated she has been “living her blessed life” after splitting from her husband, Jay Tucker, 53 four months ago. The couple tied the knot in May 2011 and had been married for eight years before announcing their split in an Instagram post, October 2019.
Nash somewhat shared why she and Tucker were splitting, stating, “they were better friends than partners,” while thanking those who had supported their union. The Emmy nominee and Tucker documented their wedding ceremony in the 2011 special Niecy Nash’s Wedding Bash that aired on TLC.
The split would be the second divorce for Nash who was married to her first husband, Don Nash. The couple were married fifteen years—and had three children—Dominic, Dia, and Donielle—before Nash filed for divorce in 2007.
The recent semi-nude photoshoot was Nash’s way of empowering herself, while reclaiming her identity and womanhood. She told People the shoot served as an expression of how she was feeling these days.
“I have never been better in my life. There is something about knowing exactly who you are and curating a life that brings you joy every day,” she said.
Although Nash states the recent split from her husband was amicable, the photoshoot was about more than her public divorces she received both public and private backlash over. The former Reno 911 actress admits the shoot was also about the overcoming the trauma she endured as a child witnessing her mother being shot and losing her only brother to gun violence.
Nash contributes her growth and overcoming of her trauma to therapy. She admits her rebirth is not due to splitting from her marriages, but from the strength she showed by being open to unpacking the past traumas she had been suppressing over the years.
“I’m not reborn because I got divorced,” Nash says. “I’m reborn because I met myself at a different space and I unpacked all of my childhood trauma.”
In addition to filming for the fourth season of TNT’s Claws, the actress is also working on her own shapewear line along with filming two Netflix projects.
Nash’s mission is to spread positivity and she wants to do that by helping women feel good about themselves because there’s already enough pressure the moment they walk out into the world.
We definitely say yes to that!
