In an interview with the New York Times, the Oscar winner mentioned that his biggest regret came when his marriage with Garner collapsed. Ben didn’t want to get divorced, but as his alcohol addiction worsened, the former couple agreed it was best to call it quits.
It should be noted that before their separation in 2017, Jennifer and Ben had been trying to work on their marriage for months. But things weren’t looking too great when the actor refused to seek professional treatment on multiple occasions.
Sources at the time claimed that the two were even seeing a therapist in one of their last attempts to save their relationship.
But by November 2018, the former couple’s divorce was finalized, and while reflecting on the situation, Ben wishes he never allowed the process to move ahead.
He wanted to get better, seek the help he needed and be a family man, but his actions showed otherwise.
“I drank relatively normally for a long time,” he said in his New York Times interview.
“What happened was that I started drinking more and more when my marriage was falling apart. This was 2015, 2016. My drinking, of course, created more marital problems.”
It wasn’t a healthy environment for Jennifer and their three kids, Violet, 14, Seraphina, 11, and Sam, 7, given that Affleck’s drinking habits only continued to worsen.
On top of that, a string of cheating allegations came to light, with reports claiming that Affleck had allegedly been getting close with the family’s former nanny, Christine Ouzounian.
A source for Us Magazine had also claimed that Ben reportedly had an affair with “Saturday Night Live” producer Lindsay Shookus while appearing to work things out with Garner before their divorce being finalized.
“They were not casually dating — they were having a full-blown affair,” a source told the publication in July 2017. “Ben and Lindsay started their affair about three years ago, just a few months after she became a mom.”
Regardless of whether infidelity played a part in Jennifer and Ben’s divorce, there’s no denying that the actor was dealing with some serious drinking issues, which appeared to have been the root of Ben’s many problems.
After hearing read his interview, sources tell Hollywood Life that Jennifer Garner is proud of her ex-husband for having the courage to address his former addiction and be open about the effects it had on his marriage.
“Ben and Jen have a great relationship now so she appreciated the kind words he used so publicly to take ownership of his past with the New York Times article,” a source explained.
“She will do anything for Ben always because of their children and he feels the same way. Sadly, their marriage didn’t work, but they both have done their best to move on for the sake of the kids.”
The couple mainly communicates to discuss their co-parenting arrangements with their children, but sources affirm that Ben and Jennifer aren’t feuding with one another.
They have come to terms with their split and hope to remain on good terms for the sake of their kids.
