Shai LaBeouf played a pivotal character in the Indiana Jones story. The young actor has made some very public comments about his opinions of the films, his role in them and their director. His outspoken criticism of director Steven Spielberg has caused a rift between Shia and the filmmakers working on the series. Now that things between Shia and the creative team are tense his character is not slated to appear in the fifth addition to the franchise. Could the feud be the reason why?
Shia LaBeouf entered the Indiana Jones franchise in The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. He playfully filled the role of Mutt Williams the illegitimate son of Marion Ravenwood and Indiana Jones. The character reignites the tragic, star-crossed love of these two iconic characters. Mutt’s role adds a new and exciting twist and more depth to the character of Indiana Jones. Many fans loved the character. His absence will be felt and leaves a large loose end in Indiana Jones’ story.
In an interview with the L.A. Times Shia had this to say about his performance in the Indiana Jones films: “I feel like I dropped the ball on the legacy that people loved and cherished,” LaBeouf told the outlet. “You get to monkey-swinging and things like that and you can blame it on the writer and you can blame it on Steven, but the actor’s job is to make it come alive and make it work, and I couldn’t do it. So that’s my fault. Simple.”
Not only was Shia critical of his own performance he had plenty to say about meeting and working with one of his idols: “I feel like I dropped the ball on the legacy that people loved and cherished,” LaBeouf told the outlet. “You get to monkey-swinging and things like that and you can blame it on the writer and you can blame it on Steven, but the actor’s job is to make it come alive and make it work, and I couldn’t do it. So that’s my fault. Simple.”
It seems Shia may have ruined any chance he ever had at appearing in another Indiana Jones film. When asked about the character Mutt Williams Indiana Jones 5 screenwriter David Koepp had the following to say: “Harrison plays Indiana Jones, that I can certainly say and the Shia LaBeouf character is not in the film.”. It seems LaBeouf will not be making a return to the film anytime soon. Mutt is Indiana Jones’ lost son. Shia’s absence is awkward at best.
It’s unclear how the filmmakers intend to explain Mutt’s absence. Indiana just found out about his son. It would be strange for him to disappear from his life again after the two just began to bond. Shia stood to become an integral part of the film franchise. Because of this rift, he stands to miss out on lucrative appearances and the possibility of awards. The series certainly isn’t going anywhere anytime soon and each film brings even more fans to the franchise.
