The Smith family that we know today isn’t one to hold secrets. When Jada Pinkett Smith revealed that she had been unfaithful to Will to his face on a live show people went nuts. For a while now, we’ve also gotten a chance to read about virtually anything that Willow and Jaden Smith say. Certainly more than one person heard those stories against their will. Will Smith’s kids aren’t for everyone that’s for sure. Their upbringing though was nothing like what their old man had to deal with in his day. Will is telling all sorts of tales from his childhood in his new memoir titled, “Will”. He took a long time to decide that title. Don’t judge a book by its cover though Will’s memoir has some horrific stories from the life of the fresh prince!
Will Shared Explicit Details of His Father’s Long History of Domestic Abuse
In an extract of Will Smith’s memoir that was shared by People Magazine Will describes one of those domestic abuse scenes that his mother went through. The Men in Black actor wrote in the book,
“When I was nine years old, I watched my father punch my mother in the side of the head so hard that she collapsed. I saw her spit blood. That moment in that bedroom, probably more than any other moment in my life, has defined who I am.”
Will Smith Vowed To “Slay” His Father
Things were so bad for Smith as a kid that at one point he vowed that he would kill his own father. A thought that potentially goes through the head of a lot of kids who are victims of domestic abuse. That thought though would come back to haunt Smith years later when he ended up caring for his father who was ill with cancer and ultimately passed away in 2016. Smith says that he was pushing his father who was in a wheelchair in those days to the bathroom. It suddenly occurred to him that he could easily push him down the stairs and finish him off. Now we know that Smith was able to fight back some of those evil thoughts. He mentions in the book,
“I paused at the top of the stairs. I could shove him down, and easily get away with it,” he backed out of the thought in time recalling, “As the decades of pain, anger, and resentment coursed then receded, I shook my head and proceeded to wheel Daddio to the bathroom.”
His Father Wasn’t An All Around Evil Guy
You have to give credit where credit is due … right? Although Will and his mother suffered greatly at the hands of his father that didn’t mean that Will Sr. was an all around evil man. Smith Jr. recalls that even though his father did plenty to hurt the family he was always there for Will to celebrate the triumphs in his career. Will Smith, the actor, says,
“My father was violent, but he was also at every game, play, and recital. He was an alcoholic, but he was sober at every premiere of every one of my movies,” he goes on saying, “He listened to every record. He visited every studio. The same intense perfectionism that terrorized his family put food on the table every night of my life.”
Although there was a dark side to his father Will still credits him for shaping the person he is today.
