Maybe we should have listened. Back when Meghan Markle was a fresh, smiling unknown who arrived unexpectedly on the royal scene as Prince Harry’s fiancee, we all raised our collective eyebrows when her father and sister began giving questionable interviews to the press and staging paparazzi photo shoots. So it was easy to disregard their opinions when they described their daughter and sister as a social climber and ghoster who would no longer give them the time of day. But maybe they weren’t entirely wrong.
Meghan Markle’s half-sister Samantha recently emailed an Australian radio show claiming to have been “right all along” about her royal sibling. And while Samantha’s vitriol has at times been nakedly self-serving and over the top, she may have a point. Back in 2016, it was Samantha who first called her sister a social climber and warned that she had long held the desire to be a princess. Angered at Meghan’s failure to invite any family on the Markle side, Samantha warned, “If you treat your own father like this, Harry is next.”
And while Harry and Meghan remain married, Samantha may have been more prescient than she knew, as the couple have recently proven by effectively quitting the British royal family. Having left her family in the United States, Meghan has now fled England from her husband’s family too, coming to rest in Canada, where they seem intent on remaining for the foreseeable future. While moving across the globe without warning and having little to no communication with family would be a drastic move for most, it seems for Meghan this is nothing new.
Perhaps the most pathetic figure in this almost soap opera-like drama is Thomas Markle, who recently lashed out at his daughter and son-in-law for “dumping” him one day before their wedding and now “dumping” the British royal family. Thomas’s credibility is checkered, as was proven when he staged an unfortunate photo shoot with paparazzi who paid him to pretend to be reading a book about England and be fitted for a tuxedo. But it’s hard to doubt his sincerity when he speaks of his sadness at his total lack of communication with his daughter and the slim possibility that he will ever meet grandson Archie.
Lest anyone forget, there have been others left in the wake of Meghan’s race to fame and fortune. Her first marriage to Trevor Engelson ended two years after it began, with some saying that Markle ended the marriage when it was no longer conducive with her acting career in Canada. Former friends report a total loss of communication with Markle, with Piers Morgan being particularly resentful of being “ghosted” by the former actress. The full fallout of “meghxit” remains to be seen, but one thing is clear- her family could have told us it was coming.
