The Voice is back for its 18th season and joining the impressive lineup of judges is new kid on the block, Nick Jonas. The “Sucker” artist is sharing the panel with previous judges Kelly Clarkson, Blake Shelton and John Legend. As with any team effort, chemistry and connection is important and many fans have been wondering how the rookie judge would blend with The Voice vets. So far, Jonas has been playfully challenged by Clarkson who let it be known that she’s a decade older than him. What she failed to realize was the fact that this isn’t Jonas’ first rodeo when it comes to older women.
Jonas and his now-wife Priyanka Chopra Jonas have a 10-year age difference between them. Although sources believed Jonas and Chopra met at the 2017 Met Gala, their history actually started long before then. Jonas slid into Chopra’s DMs in 2016 after being encouraged by a mutual friend of theirs Quantico actor Graham Rogers. The same day, Chopra responded and cunningly replied that the musician should text her before leaving her number.
The interaction would move away from the digital world and enter the real one months before the 2017 Met Gala at an Oscars after-party.
According to Jonas in an interview with Vogue, he mimmicked proposing before exclaiming, “You’re real. Where have you been all my life?” As far as their age difference goes, it’s never been something that’s bothered them. Chopra told Vogue, “I call him Old Man Jonas.”
It wouldn’t be until May of the following year that dating rumors between the couple would truly begin. And by the end of the summer, Jonas and Chopra announced they were engaged. Jonas and Chopra would make things official and tie the knot in a series of ceremonies transcending cultures and religious backgrounds.
Chopra has been a constant cheerleader for her husband, especially since becoming a Jonas herself. She has appeared in music videos, attended shows and has been a beacon of support.
In a recent interview with the Today show, Chopra shared glowingly about her husband, “It’s super exciting. I think Nick just needs to be himself, which he’s going to. He knows about music so much. He’s literally been a music prodigy since he was 7 years old, so I think it’ll be amazing to see him working with new musicians and adding to that.”
Jonas might have given some more insight on how he feels about the age difference between he and his wife on the Season 18 premiere episode of The Voice. A contestant named Todd Tilgham, who is a pastor and a father of eight, performed sang a cover song of Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band’s “We’ve Got Tonight” that made all of the judges turn their seats around.
Jonas used his connection to the church and being a preacher’s kid himself to appeal to the singer’s heart. “I’m a PK so I’m actually a pastor’s kid. My most fond memories were with my dad at the piano singing praise and worship songs. Do you know Phillips, Craig, and Dean?” he asked the contestant who then answered “yes”.
Clarkson chimed in and told Jonas, “I love that you pulled out Phillips, Craig, and Dean.” The contestant Tilgham echoed the sentiment warmly by saying it was “old school”.
“I know, but, like I’m a decade older than you,” said Clarkson. Jonas retorted by saying she wasn’t a decade older than him but Clarkson explained she was 37, 10 years older than the Jonas brother.
Jonas brushed it off and joked, “My wife’s 37. It’s cool.”
In the past, Chopra has said that their age difference has gotten them their fair share of flack in the past. “People gave us a lot of sh*t about that and still do,” she revealed in a 2019 InStyle interview, “I find it really amazing when you flip it and the guy is older, no one cares and actually people like it.”
Either way, the couple are madly in love, and unapologetic about not allowing the world to allow their age to define how they feel about one another.
