Many celebrities got their big break by being cast in a horror film. Some people would've never guessed that these particular stars had the guts to act in such a film. Some of our favorite stars were even cast as the main character. Some on the other hand, were unfortunately cast as victims playing a minor role. Whatever horror gig that these celebrities have chosen to play in, it still shows their incredible skill as an actor. Let's take a look...

Introduced to Horror

Tom Hanks snagged his first acting role in 1980 after he moved to New York City in 1979. He was cast in the low-budget slasher film, He Knows You're Alone (1980). The film is based on a soon-to-be bride who is stalked by a killer the weekend before her wedding.

Jennifer Aniston was cast in the fantasy comedy slasher flick, Leprechaun (1993). However, it is a film that Jennifer is not proud of and is quite embarrassed to admit that she was in it. It follows a vengeful leprechaun who believes a family stole his pot of gold.

Horror Life

Johnny Depp was focused on his music when he snagged the part of Glen in the 1984 slasher film, A Nightmare on Elm Street. Written by Wes Craven, the film is based on teenager friends being killed in their dreams, thus being killed in reality by Freddy Krueger. Johnny played the role of a blonde beach jock who was a football player.

Charlize Theron was cast for a minor role in the 1995 horror flick, Children of the Corn: Urban Harvest. The plot consists of two mysterious brothers who were brought to a new city where they begin a new cult. The film also marks the debut role of Nicholas Brendon who is also known for the television series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997 to 2003).

The Slasher Movement

George Clooney got his big break by starring in the comedy slasher film, Return to Horror High (1987). The plot follows a production crew who begin to disappear while shooting a movie based on a killing spree in a high school. George plays alongside actress, Maureen McCormick (also known as Marsha Brady).

Renee Zellweger snagged a role in the 1995 slasher film, Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation, alongside actor, Matthew McConaughey. In an interview with Yahoo! Movies in 2016, Renee quoted: "It was the best workout ever!" and she claims she will be forever grateful for her role.

There are many celebrities who got their big break in the entertainment business by taking on a role in a horror film. They were undoubtedly seen with great potential and many actors have moved on to be very successful in their careers. Some celebrities are embarrassed to admit their role in these horror flicks, which is fine, but some embrace their ambition and passion into the world of gore and fear. It's something to be proud of even if it wasn't the best.
