Jessica Simpson has opened up about where she feels she, Britney Spears, and Christina Aguilera stand today. The 39-year-old singer, actress, and “Open Book” author has mostly been making headlines for candidly revealing her past in her headline-making memoir, but a recent interview saw the “Dukes of Hazzard” star and fashion designer talk about past days.
In particular, Jessica was exploring the music industry’s reputation for pushing young girls as they embark on their careers – Jessica mentioned both “Toxic” and “Genie In A Bottle” singers Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.
Jessica was speaking at the 2020 Create & Cultivate conference in Los Angeles, where she was the keynote speaker. She aired her thoughts on 38-year-old Britney and 39-year-old Christina.
“I think everybody’s careers have their own unique stories, and I love that Britney owns herself, Christina owns herself, and they don’t let the world control them,” she said, adding:
“They just are themselves, and that’s who I am as well.”
Jessica then slammed the music industry.
“We grew up in a very competitive environment when it came to our record labels and being pushed to do things that were unnecessary for success.”
Back in 1999, Jessica was being pitted as a rival to Britney. The star stated that she was releasing her “I Wanna Love You Forever” ballad in order to stand out from her pop rival, wanting the public to respect her for her talent.
“Yeah, we both have long blonde hair and we’re young,” Jessica said, “but I think that’s where it stops,” she added.
The star further revealed that Columbia Records music exec and ex to Mariah Carey, Tommy Mottola had later pressed her to be more like Spears by wearing skimpier clothing and dancing.
Jessica continued to gush over both Britney and Christina.
“Everybody has found their own way, in such a beautiful, inspiring way. I just love it that everybody has remained authentically who they are,” she said. “There’s so much room at the top! I mean, think about how many people are in heaven! Come on,” she said as she was interviewed by correspondent Katie Krause.
“There’s a lot of room at the top and I am happy to share any top slot with anybody. But the fact that I’m even considered at the top is a very funny thing, because I’m a dreamer, so I have more things to do,” she added.
Both Britney and Christina have made headlines of late. While mom of two Britney has been in the hospital with a broken foot following a dance injury (and her conservatorship is set to continue for at least several more months), Christina fronted media outlets yesterday for performing at the Kobe Bryant “Celebration Of Life” memorial in Los Angeles – the “Dirrty” singer was joined by singer Beyonce as the celebrity world and general public marked the loss of 41-year-old basketball star Kobe.
