After the renewal of a set of felony charges, Jussie Smollett appeared in court on Monday. The Empire actor allegedly staged a hate crime scene last year and lied to the police that he had been targeted and attacked in what seemed a racist and homophobic attack.

Jussie Smollett had at first appeared to have dodged the charges leveled against him, when they were all dropped, and the move sparked some controversy. He is now in court again, after being indicted on six new charges.

Last year, Smollett pleaded not guilty of all the sixteen counts a few weeks before the Cook County State Attorney decided to dismiss the case. Dan Webb, a special prosecutor who was appointed to investigate the state attorney’s office, was also present. Appearing a fresh with six counts, Jussie still denied the charges.

Going by what the Chicago Tribune reported, he appeared on Monday to learn the jury assigned his case and took a plea, after which there was a bond hearing.

Jussie Smollett alleged that on January 29th last year, two white men attacked him on the streets of Chicago near Loews Hotel. According to his claims, the attackers were in ski masks and beat him while yelling racist and homophobic slurs. Jussie Smollett, who was then 36, added that they had a rope tied around his neck and splashed bleach on him.

The two claimed that America was a ‘MAGA’ country, which was Donald Trump’s slogan in the previous elections. The Chicago police took the possible hate crime allegations seriously and launched an investigation.

Investigators Uncover a Blurry Video

Barely a month after the attack, investigators unearthed a video that would turn the entire course of the case, and label Jussie a possible participant and planner of the assault. The video showed two men walk to the alleged scene, and it became a probable cause that the actor staged the whole thing.

Jussie Smollett was then arrested, but later released on bond. Jussie, however, suffered a blow having been written off Empire and slapped with 16 counts for lying to the police.

Jussie Smollett’s Case was Rightfully Dismissed

The dismissal of Smollett’s case in March last year was termed as abrupt and raised some suspicion. A special prosecutor was thus appointed to investigate the state attorney’s office.

However, the prosecutor did not find evidence of an irregularity in the dismissal. There was no evidence to support the charges, thus the case was appropriately dismissed. According to Tina Glandian, Jussie’s second prosecution is pure politics. Celebrities and politicians notably rallied behind the actor in the media, with Kamala Harris terming the attack a ‘modern-day lynching.’
