Ben Affleck has been on a roll lately, being open about his personal life and struggles with addiction during his press tour for “The Way Back”. The film is about a basketball coach who helps an underdog student team to win a championship, while also dealing with conflicts and trauma from his past.
Similarly, Affleck has been reconciling with his past and revisiting his regrets and thoughts on ex-wife Jennifer Garner and ex-girlfriend Jennifer Lopez. Here’s a look into their past relationships and his current thoughts.
Affleck and Lopez dated briefly after meeting on the set of “Gigli”, a box office flop and eventual predictor of their breakup. The couple were nicknamed ‘Bennifer’ and were even engaged in 2004.
Lopez even had Affleck be in her music video for “Jenny From The Block” where he’s seen massaging her, bikini-clad, and on a huge yacht.
At the time, Affleck said the video almost ruined his career, receiving critique and hate from his fans. They eventually called it quits.
Affleck has recently praised Lopez for her performance in “Hustlers” saying she’s the real deal and should have been nominated for more awards, moreover an Oscar nod. Affleck also confirmed that he still keeps in touch with his ex and has a deep respect for her.
Lopez has said that their split happened because of the paparazzi and tabloid storm of that era. She says she has no regrets though and would do it all over again. It’s good to see they’re keeping it friendly.
Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck met on the set of “Daredevil” and had stayed together until their separation in 2015, then divorce in 2018. The two had seemed like the perfect Hollywood couple, both movie stars with beautiful children.
Affleck attributes his issues to alcoholism, drinking regularly until it started causing even more marital problems. On top of that, during his and Garner’s separation, he hit scandal levels when he starting sleeping with his kids’ nanny, then firing her.
In an interview with Diana Sawyer, Affleck says getting divorced from Garner was one of his biggest regrets, which also include allowing his children to see him haphazardly drunk. He never saw himself as being separate from his children and wife, traumatized by his own father’s alcoholism.
He also sincerely thanked Garner for being such a great mother and partner before, during, and after the divorce process.
Garner has since said that she’s flattered by Affleck’s praise for her, also glad that they can co-parent peacefully.
