Since the 1970’s vivacious actress Valerie Bertinelli has been charming audiences with her friendly smile and down to earth nature. Originally from Wilmington Delaware, Bertinelli is best known for her role in the groundbreaking sitcom One Day at a Time, which featured a heavily led female cast that revolved around a single mother raising her two daughters after a terrible divorce. This may seem commonplace in the new millennium but back in the day that kind of subject matter was considered taboo.
The show went on to garner rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. Bertinelli even snagged a few awards for her performance as the precocious Barbara Cooper, including two Golden Globe awards. When speaking about her time on the show Bertinelli claimed she was very unhappy due to body weight issues. Eventually, she met and married legendary rock star Eddie Van Halen and they got married soon after. However, there was trouble in paradise and Bertinelli had to face years of Van Halen’s infidelity.
Bertinelli spoke about that difficult time in her life in her autobiography Losing It. Oprah.com reports;
Valerie says the picture of her marriage only looked great from the outside. “I’m the wife of this amazing musician, and lots of girls want him, and I got him,” she says. On the inside, Valerie says her marriage was sad—she and Eddie didn’t connect. “He had his responsibilities of what he had to do, and I had my responsibilities,” she says. “And we thought if you just live in the same house there would be a connection, but no.”
After divorcing Van Halen Bertinelli minimized her public profile to work on herself outside of her celebrity status. She had some very dark days where she had to deal with her body issues, eventually becoming a spokeswoman for Jenny Craig. It was during that time Bertinelli became interested in different ways to create food, leading to a resurgence in her career as an actress (she starred on TV Land’s critically acclaimed series Hot in Cleveland for five seasons) and also as a chef.
Now preparing to turn 60 Bertinelli is happily learning new ways to deal with her weight issues, an ongoing struggle that she faces by making better food choices. Showbiz Cheatsheet reports that there’s one standard she uses that keeps her feeling full for hours; Bulletproof Coffee.
It’s a beverage made of coffee with grass-fed butter or ghee and coconut oil all whipped together in a blender. Many followers of the keto diet find it to be a filling breakfast option that holds them over to lunchtime.
Bertinelli even shared her own personal recipe for the morning beverage.
“I definitely enjoy my Bulletproof coffee in the morning!,” she said. “I brought all of my Bulletproof ingredients [to New York City] with me: The fresh coffee, the ghee—I buy vanilla ghee online—the brain octane fuel, and the collagen protein.”
Sounds like Bertinelli has found a “bulletproof” way of reaching her weight loss goals without compromising flavor.
