Grimes stayed cagey on Twitter this weekend in a Q&A over the baby she is set to welcome with Tesla founder Elon Musk. The 31-year-old pop star made headlines galore earlier this year for shocking fans with a baby bump update – now it looks like the Canadian-born music face is making some statements over the baby’s gender.
Grimes took to Twitter on Friday, referring to her baby as “they” after a fan asked her: “You will have a girl or a boy?”
Grimes opted out of revealing the gender of her unborn child, instead continuing:
“They may decide their fate and identity.”
Grimes is now 7 months pregnant, per her latest reveal. Her words echoed those made during a YouTube Livestream: “I don’t want to say the gender of the baby,” she wrote, adding: “Because I feel like their privacy should be protected.”
“I don’t think they can consent to being famous or being in public. And I don’t want to gender them in case that’s not how they feel in their life. I don’t know, I just feel like it doesn’t need to be known,” she continued.
Grimes’ Livestream did, however, see the star confirm that a name has been chosen.
“I have a name for the baby, but I don’t want to say what it is because everyone I’ve told it hates it, and everyone’s gonna make fun of it,’ she confessed.
“But it is, in fact, a genius name and people just don’t appreciate it yet because it’s too avant-garde,” she added.
Born Claire Elise Boucher, Grimes has been in a relationship with 48-year-old Musk since May 2018.
“Had some complications early on, a decent second trimester but starting to hurt everywhere at 25 wksz,” she began, adding:
“What were yalls experience w this stuff like? I feel like I was woefully ill prepared cuz I dunno if pregnancy is as visible or discussed as it should be. I just didn’t rly understand what I was getting into. It’s been good too, but it makes working a lot harder. Good at writing and having lots of wild ideas tho, but anything physical is hard. Im also way more emo and less capable of bravery in the face of haters online and stuff haha.”
Grimes’ post also saw her apologize to fans for slacking when it came to promoting her new album.
“I’m sorry I haven’t been promoting my album properly or on social media more. This whole thing has been a bit of an ordeal,” she admitted.
Elsewhere, the Q&A saw Grimes probed over whether she’d ever collaborate with Lady Gaga – she would if Gaga would “have” her. Grimes was also asked who her style icons are, with the star responding that she looks up to model Bella Hadid and reality star Kim Kardashian.
