Serena Williams, currently ranked the NO. 9 tennis player in the world, has always been candid about her journey being a first-time mom with husband, Alexis Ohanian. The tennis star vulnerably discussed details of her difficult birth back in 2017. The pregnancy went well, but Serena's heart rate dove dangerously low during contractions leading the doctors to perform an emergency C-section. The surgery itself was without complications, but the next day became a nightmare when she felt short of breath.

Williams, very aware of her body, thankfully took immediate action. She walked to the nurse's station and told them she needed a CT scan and IV heparin fearing she was having a pulmonary embolism. After having to convince the nurse and doctor, they finally sent for a CT. William's suspicions were confirmed as the CT revealed several small blood clots that had settled in her lungs. One crisis averted, but Williams was not in the clear yet.

Coughing spells from the pulmonary embolism caused the wound from her C-section to be pushed open. The resulting surgery revealed a large hematoma in her abdomen. The very same blood thinners used to save her from her embolism caused further complications. She was rushed to the operating room again to have a filter inserted into a major vein, to prevent more clots from dislodging and making their way to her lungs. It was a full week later before Williams was able to leave the hospital.

The road since then has been very emotional for Williams. She admits to worrying that she is not always being the best mother. In a 2019 E! News interview she states, “I’m a perfectionist, so I tend to second-guess myself a lot, but I’m trying to just be confident in that. For me it’s my first time around being a mom and I kinda beat myself up over everything. I missed her first steps an that was really hard for me.

Most recently Williams posted a candid photo of her in the backseat holding her 2 year old daughter. The adorable toddler on her shoulder, but Williams looks drained. “I am not sure who took this picture but Working and being a mom is not easy,” Williams wrote. “I am often exhausted, stressed, and then I go play a professional tennis match. We keep going. I am so proud and inspired by the women who do it day in and day out,” she continued. “I’m proud to be this baby’s mama @olympiaohanian. #nofilter #nomakeup #nohairbursh lol #justme.”
