Meek Mill Adds Actor to his Resume with Film Debut in 'Charm City Kings'

Philly born rapper Meek Mill, 32, is seemingly keeping his name in headlines these days. This time its for his debut in Charm City Kings, a breakout film at Sundance Film Festival, produced by celebrity couple, Will and Jada Pinkett Smith. The hip hop star’s name has been seen in the news quite a bit lately from his previous relationship with fellow rapper, Nicki Minaj, recent baby announcement with girlfriend, Milan Harris, to his active involvement with his push to help shed a light on the disparities within the criminal justice system and help reform it.

The Dreams and Nightmares artist, first came onto the music scene in 2001 as a battle rapper before signing to Rick Ross’s MMG label. Not long after he became a regular fixture in music industry, he was thrusted into the spotlight further due to his past encounters with law enforcement. While his passion for music is clear, the 32-year-old recording artist’s criminal history was brought to light in 2014 when his probation was revoked. The rapper apparently violated the 12-year probation and was sentenced to three-to-six months in jail.

News of his sentence sparked an uproar across the nation regarding the ridiculous sentence and the perpetuated cycle of injustices black people face regarding the broken criminal justice system. Mill’s case was one of many situations that people in the black community encounter on a regular basis in America. The call to action pushed the rapper to join forces with other prominent figures in the industry to help eliminate the disparities between the criminal justice system and African American communities. Now in addition to his social activism role with the prison reform agenda he is a part of with fellow rapper, Jay Z, Mill’s can add actor to his list of titles.

In the film, Charm City Kings, Mill’s plays notorious ex-con and stunt-riding force Blax. The film is centered around Maryland’s bike culture and the parallels Mill’s life story made him a perfect choice for the role. Mill’s stars alongside Jahi Di’Allo Winton (Queen & Slim) who plays the teenage Mouse. After losing his brother to the streets, Mouse searches for his tribe among a group of dirt bikers in the streets of Baltimore. He finds himself torn between the influence of Blax and his mother.

The film also stars Teyonah Parris (The Photograph) as Mouse’s mother and William Catlett (Black Lightning) as Detective Rivers. James Lassiter who’s collaborated on other film projects (Hitch, Seven Pounds) with the Smith’s, also serves as executive producer alongside Pinkett-Smith. The film premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival in January and received positive reviews. Charm City Kings was directed by Angel Manuel Soto and is scheduled to appear in theaters April 10.
