There have been many iconic celebrity couples but none knew and popular as Beyonce and Jay-Z. They were individually popular before they got married in 2008 and became the ultimate celebrity power couple.
With how much they've grown together, as a family with three children and as musicians with highly successful individual and joint albums, it'd be difficult to imagine a time when there was no "Beyonce and Jay-Z." That's how good they are together.
Still, in the early 2000s, Beyonce was starting her solo music career, and Jay Z was already a popular rapper, and no one thought the pairing would work so well. Even then, they were as private about their lives and relationship as they are now, and when they did release any information, it always became a hot topic in the media.
A classic example was when Beyonce released her hit single "Crazy in Love," a song about fiery passion and being totally in love with someone. Many blogs, magazines, and fans began to speculate about whether the song reflected her feelings for Jay-Z.
So, is it? Or was the pop star singing for all the women in love out there? Read on to find out.
The Early Days Of Beyonce And Jay-Z's Relationship
Beyonce and Jay Z met in 2000 at an MTV festival in Cancun. At the time, she was 18 years old, and he was just about to turn 30. They were first friends and then started dating about a year later.
In several later interviews, Beyonce revealed that they spoke on the phone a lot for about a year and a half, and it built a foundation that was very important to the success of their relationship. On his part, Jay Z later rapped about how they met and how he knew she was the one in a 2018 song titled "713."
Despite how popular they both were at the time, they were adamant that their relationship would remain private, so the public never knew anything except rumors and a few hints here and there.
Finally, in 2002, they collaborated on Jay-Z's hit song "03 Bonnie & Clyde" for the first time. The public received this as a display of their yet to be confirmed relationship, and it was a big moment for many of their fans. The song quickly became a hit that topped charts worldwide.
The Story Behind Crazy In Love
A year after "03 Bonnie & Clyde" was released, Beyonce released her first single, "Crazy in Love," which featured Jay-Z. The song became an instant hit, quickly dominated the number one position on many music charts, and won awards at the 2004 Grammys.
Apart from Beyonce's amazing vocals on the track, another huge factor contributing to its success was the message behind the lyrics. The song came when the public was still gleaming the little hints they could find about her relationship with Jay-Z.
So when it dropped, and it was all about a woman that is crazy in love with her man, it was seen as an expression of her feelings for him.
When Beyonce herself described what the song meant, she said that it was all about a girl in a relationship, who realizes that she is in love and that it is making her do things she normally wouldn't do, but she doesn't care. To anyone following her relationship with Jay-Z, it wasn't too hard to connect the dots.
They Subsequently Collaborated On Several Songs
In the years that followed, the duo finally made their relationship public, got married, and collaborated on several other hit songs, such as "Deja vu," which topped charts in 2006, and "Drunk In Love," their 2013 tune that had the world belting out the lyrics and seemed like a follow up to "Crazy In Love."
Some other songs that they have collaborated on include "That's How You like It," "Lift Off," "Welcome To Hollywood," "Family Feud," "Shining," and several others that have been very successful in music charts all over the world.
They have created a joint album called "Everything In Love," released in 2018 and has been called a body of musical art by fans and music critics. They have also gone on highly successful world tours, sold-out arenas, and built a fan base that has stuck by them through the decades.
Beyonce And Jay-Z Have A Strong Relationship
In her HBO documentary titled "Life is But a Dream," Beyonce shared her truth about her marriage and gave her fans the gift of private footage of the life they share.
In the documentary, she spoke very highly of her husband and said they always bring out the best in each other. She said, "He's taught me so much about being an artist. Not a musician but an artist and fighting for what I believe and having my standards. He doesn't compromise his art. I used to be afraid of people thinking I was too difficult or too critical but I don't care about that anymore as long as it is the right reasons, and I learned that from him."
After the documentary was released, she appeared on the Oprah show with Oprah Winfrey and shared more about how strong her relationship with Jay-Z and how their many years together have not waned her love one bit. She explained that the solid dynamic that they built as friends was a very big help in supporting their marriage.
Today, Beyonce and Jay-Z are still happily married, still building their already successful music and business careers, and have built a family with their three children— Blue Ivy Carter and their twins— Sir and Rumi Carter.
