In the 80s and 90s, Robert Downey Jr. was the definition of a party animal. He was at the height of his career. He was enjoying every aspect of Hollywood life, including easy access to drugs, sex, and excessive amounts of alcohol.

Though Downey Jr.'s substance abuse didn't start with his stardom. He'd been using drugs and alcohol since he was very young. Both his parents struggled with addiction.

Eventually, his substance abuse got out of control. He was arrested for possession of marijuana, cocaine, and heroin several times. After failing to get sober, he was sentenced to three years in prison. After serving a year, and getting sober, he was released and started his life over.

These days Downey Jr. is still sober and has completely turned his life around.

Jessica Simpson revealed a lot in her new memoir Open Book. While there was a ton of juicy celebrity gossip, there were also some more heartbreaking revelations - like why she got sober.

In the memoir, Simpson revealed that she was the survivor of childhood sexual abuse and that she started drinking to deal with the unresolved trauma. The pressures of fame made her drinking worse, and eventually, she was drinking all the time. Simpson revealed that she always had a full glass of wine with her.

She quit drinking because she realized how much of her life she was missing. She's been sober for a few years now.

Kelly Osbourne

Kelly Osbourne grew up surrounded by drugs and alcohol. Both of her parents struggled with drinking and drug use, as did her brother. And Osbourne herself has struggled with substance abuse for several years.

In her 2017 memoir, she talked extensively about her struggles with addiction and talked about going to rehab for her issues more than once. She would put together some time sober and then relapse.

In 2019, Osbourne revealed that she was celebrating one year of sobriety after her last relapse. She said that the year before that had been the hardest of her life and that things got really dark. She got sober so she could live and be happy, and she's still sober today.

Demi Lovato also struggled with addiction for several years before she got sober, hopefully, for good. Lovato's substance abuse started when she was a teenager. By the time she was 18, she'd already been to rehab for cocaine abuse.

Over the next several years, Lovato would get sober and relapse again. She managed to stay sober for six years and became an icon of young sobriety. But her eating disorder and the pressures of fame led her to relapse again in 2018. She overdosed and almost died. After that, she checked into rehab again.

Since her overdose, she's stayed sober. Today, she's putting her sobriety first as she makes an incredible comeback.
