Dr. Amie Harwick was many things, a family and relationship therapist in Hollywood, the ex-fiancée to comedian Drew Carey, and likely a murder victim. As it appears, Harwick, 38 at the time of her suspected murder, was likely strangled before being thrown from a three-story high balcony at her home in Hollywood Hills, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

Her ex-boyfriend Garth Pursehouse, who she previously had a restraining order against, is facing charges for murder and first-degree burglary as the likely suspect.

On Monday, the Los Angeles coroner's office ruled that Dr. Harwick's death was a homicide and attributed the cause to injuries consistent with a fall and blunt force trauma, according to their website and the police report.

During the autopsy, the coroner's office found evidence of "manual strangulation," and they noted in an email that the fall from the balcony happened after an altercation.

The initial police report stated there was evidence of forced entry and evidence of a struggle present at the crime scene.

The detectives working Harwick's case discovered that she had been expressing fear over her ex-boyfriend, Pursehouse. Harwick had a restraining order against Pursehouse on two different occasions. The first was in 2011, but the domestic charges and the restraining order were thrown out. She filed a second in 2012, but it had lapsed by the time of her murder.

According to the restraining order, Pursehouse had allegedly been abusive towards Harwick in the past, with her telling police:

"He has suffocated me, punched me, slammed my head on the ground, kicked me"

Drew Carey, comedian and the Price is Right host, had dated the Hollywood relationship therapist for two years, leading to a surprise engagement in the eyes of many fans, before the couple split in 2018.

Carey canceled tapings for the Price is Right in light of Harwick's death, taking a personal week of mourning, that no fans of the show can blame him for. He also took to Twitter to say:

"I hope you’re lucky enough to have someone in your life that loves as much as she did" petition

Within days of Harwick's tragic death, Drew Carey shared a petition to Twitter that calls for updated domestic violence laws. The petition can be found on, and it asks for a recommended donation of $11 to help get the petition on the agenda.

The petition was created by a self-described friend of Harwick, Diana Arias, and calls for four changes to the current domestic violence laws, including that restraining orders no longer expire without the victim's request, abusers must have mandatory counseling, victims not having to testify in courtrooms if their abusers are close by, and a proposition for a registry of domestic abusers.
