Prominent Los Angeles-based family therapist and the former ex-girlfriend of comedian Drew Carey, Amie Harwick, appears to have been strangled prior to a highly publicized brutal murder where she was thrown from the third-floor balcony of her Hollywood Hills apartment, as per a new coroner report.

The Los Angeles County Coroner's Office released a statement Thursday confirming that the murder of Doctor Amie Harwick was under investigation and that currently Harwick's ex-boyfriend, Garth Pursehouse is the main entity in question.

Pursehouse, in the wake of these allegations, was charged with both murder and first-degree residential burglary with a special circumstance allegation of lying in wait. This special circumstance supersedes that of the normal charge, rendering him a candidate to receive the death penalty for his actions.

The 41-year old's arraignment has been postponed until March 4, and the public defender tasked with representing him has not issued a comment in regards to the legal proceedings Pursehouse will be taking part in.

The coroner's office had ruled Harwick's death a homicide back on Monday, saying that death was induced through blunt force injuries, according to the official website.

Coroner spokeswoman Sarah Ardalani went on to add that the office deemed that "manual strangulation" was also a cause in Harwick's death prior to the three story fall that took her life that night.

Detectives found compelling evidence to showcase forced entry into the home that evening, which Pursehouse was then subsequently charged with.

She wrote that Harwick's death occurred as, "a result of poor laws not protecting the victims and treating the offenders."

"I refuse to let her death be in vain," the friend of the late doctor also wrote in the petition's description.

No further details regarding Harwick's passing have been released at this time.
