Last year after the release of Spiderman Far From Home rumors started to surface over whether or not Sony was going to be able to reach a deal with Disney to allow Tom Holland's Spiderman to remain in the MCU. At the time the future was looking a bit grim. Many sources even reported that there was no way that a deal was going to get done. Therefore Marvel would have to scrap the character altogether. The news this time around is that a deal could get done.

What Is The Issue?

This is a situation that we have seen before. Marvel had sold the rights to some of their characters before they completed a full sale of the company to the Walt Disney Company. That is why there has always been an issue with licensing over these characters even though Marvel belongs to Disney now.

It is why the X-Men and the Fantastic 4 were property of 20th Century Fox. Spiderman's rights are still held by Sony who has allowed Disney to include Spiderman in the MCU.

Spiderman Himself Got Involved

When word got out that there was this licensing issue over the rights to Spiderman it was really looking like Tom Holland's take on the character was going to come to an end. Holland did not take the news lightly and decided to take matters into his own hands. He directly called Disney CEO Bob Iger to learn more about the situation. That and the display of support for Holland's character by the fans where big reasons why it seems that a deal is close.

Here is where we stand with the character as of right now. Spiderman is going to be allowed to return to the MCU one more time. Also, we are going to get a third stand-alone film featuring Holland's Spiderman. After that everything is up in the air.

Still, there is hope that Spidey will get a chance to stay on as a main fixture of the MCU. Both Tom Rothman of Sony and Alan Horn of Disney said they where hopefully a deal could get done in the near future.

What Would Happen If No Deal Gets Done?

If no deal gets done it is pretty simple Spiderman would have to be scrapped from the MCU entirely. It would be highly unlikely that we would be able to see Holland return as Spiderman since Disney would try and say that Holland is their take on the character.

Ultimately if we ever did see a return of the character it may be with a whole new cast. On the other hand, maybe Tobey Maguire returns to being spidey. At this point, we can only speculate on what will happen.
