Shay Mitchell gave birth to her daughter Atlas last October, almost six months after suffering from a miscarriage. The former Pretty Little Liars star kept the pregnancy a secret for the first two trimesters after experiencing the loss with her first.

She announced the birth on Instagram on October 20 with the caption: "Never Letting Go."

Just before the birth of her daughter, Mitchell spoke out about suffering from prepartum depression, something that surprised her as not many people talk about it.

On October 3 last year, the You star opened up to Hatchland about the condition. She said, “As long as I can remember, I’ve heard about postpartum depression. However, to be depressed at the beginning came as a shock. The isolation and anxiety I experienced was crippling. I thought I was going out of my mind and questioned why nobody ever talked to me about this phase."

She continued, "I’ve been fortunate since sharing the news of my pregnancy to have some amazing conversations with other pregnant women and moms and know that all these feelings are ‘normal.’"

It's incredibly helpful to other women who may be experiencing the same feelings to know they aren't the only ones going through this.

Mitchell spoke about the loneliness she felt during such a secretive time. Most women wait at least 12 weeks to announce their pregnancy, when the risk of miscarriage goes down significantly. However, due to her previous loss, Mitchell waited even longer.

She said, “Feeling that I was alone in my depression compounded my state of mind, but I have found since sharing the news publicly that many women feel as I did. Pregnancy can be a hard time, especially if you’re having to hide it. After I came out publicly, I felt an enormous wave of relief and was finally able to start enjoying the pregnancy.”

Now, Mitchell has spoken recently about her feelings after giving birth to her daughter as well, and how important it is for her to have a support system.

She recently spoke to Us Weekly about needing help, and how this has been key to her success as a mother for the last four months. She said, "I feel like definitely having the support system around you. Because I think especially having a newborn, you’re going up and down with your emotions and dealing with all new things that I’ve never had to deal with before.”

Speaking about the newness and all the unknowns of motherhood, Mitchell told Us, “It’s all the unknown is what I call it."

She continued, "So having a good group of friends and people around you who have either been through it, or can just be an ear to listen to all of your thoughts, and stories of what’s been going on (is key). But you know, I have a really, really good support team and so I’ve been really fortunate with that.”

Mitchell's comments should come as something of a relief for other mothers going through up and down emotions themselves, knowing other women go through the same thing.
