Perhaps one of the most recognized and popular couples in the world, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge- known in the media as Prince William and Kate Middleton- didn’t always have it so easy. This was especially true when they were dating. The couple met when they were both students at the University of St. Andrews in 2001. It was rumored that Kate caught William’s eye when she walked the runway during a fashion show, in which she was seen wearing a see-through dress.

Then, the two shared an apartment with two of their friends, which is what led to them becoming a couple in 2003. Naturally, as William is one of the most popular faces in the United Kingdom, the paparazzi and media would have gobbled this up. So, the couple did everything possible to make sure that their relationship was kept under wraps. Even Kate Middleton’s father, Mike Middleton, told the media that they are just friends who are sharing an apartment together. He even dismissed the idea of becoming in-laws with the royal family.
Then, in 2007, the couple broke up temporarily. There are rumors that this happened because Kate was ready to settle down and start a family, but William wanted to maintain his career in the military and wasn’t ready to become a full-time royal just yet. The couple did not share much information about their breakup, but it became known that Kate went to Ireland with some friends, which is just what was needed for the couple to rekindle their relationship.

Throughout the course of their long relationship, Kate was dubbed “Waity Katie” because of how long the couple was together before they were engaged. Luckily, Prince William popped the question in October of 2010, and the couple formally announced their engagement on November 16, 2010. Their wedding took place on April 29, 2011 at the Westminster Abbey, and quickly became one of the most-watched televised weddings in history. It seems like the couple finally got their happily ever after.

Since then, the couple has seemed to grow comfortable in their titles and they became the parents of three children. The couple has visited many countries together, including Singapore, Malaysia, New Zealand, Australia, the United States, India, and Pakistan. They have also participated in many charity events and are huge advocates for bringing awareness to mental illnesses. Most recently, the Duchess of Cambridge has been working on a national survey, which has the intention of asking people all across the UK about issues dealing with children under 5 years old.
