Prince William and Kate Middleton have been married for almost a decade, but there was a time when the public was far less sure about their romance. In fact, before Middleton became The Duchess of Cambridge, her own father denied that she was in any kind of relationship with Prince William.

This was at a time when the two were much less public about their relationship, in the years after they first met one another at St. Andrews University in the U.K.

William and Kate first met in the early 2000s at university, and the two were initially just friends with one another. Eventually, the two got together. Following their graduation, though, the two did undergo a few rough patches.

In 2007, they separated, although it only lasted for a few months. The separation was a result of a disagreement as to when the best time to settle down was. Kate wanted to marry in 2007, but William wasn't ready to commit to full-time royal work at that time.

By 2010, though, William was ready for marriage, and the two announced their engagement. Although it all ended with a happily ever after, old reporting suggests that Kate's father was not initially thrilled about the idea of making their relationship public.

According to Express, a reporter named Louisa Pearson said in 2003 that Kate's father Michael denied that his daughter was dating Prince William. Instead, he reportedly told members of the media that the two were just really good friends.

“People do not seem to realize that there are two girls and two boys sharing the flat at university,” Michael reportedly said. “They are together all the time because they’re the best of pals – and yes, cameramen are going to get photos of them together. But there is nothing more to it than that.”

He also said that the rumors of their relationship were entertaining, but that he didn't think it was likely that he would wind-up an in-law to the royal family.

Ultimately, it's not totally clear why Michael decided to deny the rumors. It's possible that, at the time, Kate hadn't informed her father about the latest developments in her dating life.

It's also possible that Michael wanted to save her daughter and William from the media scrutiny, at least for a time. He may have known that, if she and William married, her life would be in the spotlight for years to come. It may have been a smart idea to let them fall in love in private.
