It’s been a mystery of some sort as to why Ben Affleck stepped down as Batman. Some said it was because of creative differences, others believed that Warner Bros. wanted to push Batman in a new direction that didn’t involve the two-time Oscar winner anymore. Affleck recently did an interview with The New York Times as he revealed the personal struggles he was dealing with during his time in the DCEU and ultimately why he decided to leave what he most likely had huge plans for.
The most shocking part of the interview was when Affleck talked about when he was working on the script for Batman. Affleck said, “I showed somebody The Batman script. They said, ‘I think the script is good. I also think you’ll drink yourself to death if you go through what you just went through again.”
Affleck said he “drank relatively normally,” but then things got out-of-control. Affleck took the path to better himself rather than force himself into a role that requires his best self.
Affleck continued to speak on his struggles with alcoholism. “I drank relatively normally for a long time. What happened was that I started drinking more and more when my marriage was falling apart. You’re trying to make yourself feel better with eating or drinking or sex or gambling or shopping or whatever,” Affleck explained. “But that ends up making your life worse. Then you do more of it to make that discomfort go away. Then the real pain starts. It becomes a vicious cycle you can’t break. That’s at least what happened to me.” It’s sad to see the struggles Affleck was going through.
Ben Affleck married Jennifer Garner back in 2005, the two ended up having three kids together. Unfortunately, the two decided to divorce in 2018 after a long separation. He said he still felt guilt about ending his marriage but has moved passed it. “The biggest regret of my life is this divorce,” Affleck continued, noticeably using the present tense. “Shame is really toxic. There is no positive byproduct of shame. It’s just stewing in a toxic, hideous feeling of low self-worth and self-loathing.”
Its a tough time for Affleck and it was obviously the best decision for him to step down from such a life-draining role like Batman. Now, Matt Reeves has taken on the director duties for The Batman set to release in 2021. The newest caped crusader is Robert Pattinson and he was recently revealed in a screen test to showcase the new batsuit. It’s a great time to be a Batman fan as Reeves is eagerly dropping little snippets of what’s to come in 2021.
