Ron Burgundy and Brian Fantana are at it again! Well, sort of: The Anchorman stars who played them, Will Ferrell and Paul Rudd, respectively, are teaming up to executive produce and star in a new TV comedy called The Shrink Next Door. Following in the footsteps of Dirty John, it's based on a podcast of the same name and is about the relationship between a therapist and one of his clients. Studio Media Rights Captial will try to sell the show to cable networks and streaming services.

It's no surprise that Paul Rudd and Will Ferrell have taken this long to work together again: Rudd has been starring in the Netflix series Living with Yourself, in which he played two of the starring roles, and which earned him a Golden Globe nomination. Although Ferrell hasn't done much acting on TV as of late, he has spent a lot of time producing, with HBO's Succession and Netflix's Dead to Me under his belt. The Shrink Next Door will be his first series regular role on a TV show since he was a Saturday Night Live cast member.

What's the Show About?

Rolling Stone describes the podcast like this:"[V]eteran journalist Joe Nocera tries to find out what happens when a doctor-patient relationship turns into something much darker." In the same vein as Dr. Death and Dirty John, it's a true story told by a journalist. It centers around Dr. Isaac "Ike" Herschkopf, a celebrity psychiatrist, and his creepily close and exploitative relationship with one of his patients, Martin "Marty" Markowitz. Rudd will play Herschkopf, and Ferrell with play opposite him as Markowitz.

According to Variety, Georgia Pritchett has agreed to write and executive produce the show. She has worked extensively with HBO, writing and co-executive producing Succession and working on Veep before that. Semi-Formal Productions' Michael Showalter and Jordana Mollick will executive produce, too, with Showalter also directing. People from the companies (Wondery and Bloomberg Media) that produced the original podcast will also work on this project, including Hernan Lopez and Marshall Lewy from Wondery, and Francesca Levy, Katie Boyce, and Jared Sandberg from Bloomberg Media. Jessica Elbaum and Brittney Segal round out the team as executive producers.

Paul Rudd and Will Ferrell are known for starring in Anchorman and Anchorman 2 together, but how did they assemble this all-star team? Most of the production team has worked with Rudd of Ferrell at one time or another: Executive producer Michael Showalter worked with Rudd on the Wet Hot American Summer film and TV series. Ferrell, while producing, has done so under the banners Gloria Sanchez and Gary Sanchez, and Jessica Elbaum and Brittney Segal are joining the project from Gloria Sanchez Productions.
