When it comes to filming sensual scenes for TV and movies, it seems like actors have a lot of tricks up their sleeves to ensure they maintain control over what is shown. Many actresses have clauses in their contracts that ensure their bodies cannot be depicted in certain ways. Ginnifer Goodwin is one of them.

When Goodwin was on Big Love, she filmed several sex scenes with Bill Paxton. She was also filmed in different stages of undress, though there a few assets she was not willing to have filmed.

Big Love followed a polygamous family living in Utah--not unlike TLC's Sister Wives. On the show, Goodwin played Margene, the third wife of the family patriarch Bill. The couple had several sex scenes together. In fact, the late Paxton filmed sex scenes with each of the three wives. Nikki was played by Chloë Sevigny and Barb was played by Jeanne Tripplehorn.

Goodwin was seemingly not thrilled with the amount of skin the women were expected to bare on the show, so she took matters into her own hands to control what was seen.

In a recent interview with Justin Long, Goodwin revealed that she had to take creative maneuvers to deal with nudity on Big Love. On Long's podcast, Life Is Short, Goodwin revealed that HBO had a strange contract system.

Apparently, HBO had a loophole in which it could show even the body parts an actress had a clause against shows, so long as those body parts were only aired during the premiere episode. Goodwin was afraid that the network might use this loophole with her scenes.

First, Goodwin would film sex scenes in such a way that her arms and legs would cover any areas she did not want to be filmed. She was afraid HBO might get sneaky, and she did not want to threaten legal action while starring in a hit show on the network.

In preparation for her sex scenes, Goodwin would adhere sticky notes to her chest or write on her body with marker to deter the director from trying to film those parts of her body.

Fortunately, Hollywood has made some changes when it comes to nudity and consent. Actresses like Goodwin may have more freedom to put contracts in place, and they certainly have more power to stand up against networks that look for loopholes.

Actors and actresses deal with sex scenes in different ways. It can be difficult to capture a snapshot of intimacy on film, and things get even more difficult for those women who are fearful of the way their bodies are captured on film.
