In the wake of Harwick’s murder, one of her friends put together a Change.Org petition aimed at reforming domestic violence laws and procedures to get more protection for the victims and treatment for the alleged offenders, which could possibly prevent another grisly incident occurring in the near future.
Diana Arias launched the petition, which will be sent to Representative Adam Schiff.
“Domestic Violence is a serious concern for everyone. I recently lost a wonderful friend, Dr. Amie Harwick. She was murdered as a result of poor laws not protecting the victims and treating the offenders. I refuse to let her death be in vain. She was a Doctor in the Mental Health Field and advocate in the community. We need to do the same and advocate for Amie. JUSTICE 4 AMIE !”
Diana continues, explaining that Harwick’s ex-boyfriend, Gareth Pursehouse, allegedly waited at her house on Valentine’s evening in order to carry out a brutal attack. 38-year-old Harwick had filed restraining orders on the man in the past, but unfortunately, they had expired.
“Amie had a restraining order in place against a violent ex boyfriend from a decade ago. The restraining order expired. Well two weeks ago, this ex boyfriend went to an event that she was at and harassed her. He began to stalk her and on Valentine’s day attack her, in her own home while he laid in wait for her to come home. This man for years clearly needed treatment. She should have never had to be in this situation like so many other victims. The process to get a restraining order is very difficult and traumatic.”
Diana also lists the areas, which she feels, need to be changed when it comes to domestic violence victims and properly handling the alleged offenders.
“1. No expiration dates unless victim requests it to be cancelled. I have been told this is unconstitutional but perhaps make it a 25 year term, verse months or a few years.”
“2. Mandatory in person long term counseling for the Stalker / Abuser . If they are sociopaths then institutionalization may be needed if they are still exhibiting the same behaviors.”
“3. Victims should not have to testify in a courtroom close to their abuser / stalker. Live Stream in a safe space in a satellite location for the hearing with the judge. It’s an extremely traumatic experience that the victim is already dealing with and should not be subjected to it again if they do not feel they can. That is why many Restraining Orders or Abusers get away with their actions.”
“4. Like Sex offenders, a Registry should be made to warn others of the deviant behavior.”
As of this posting, the Change.Org petition has amassed more than 16,000 signatures.
Along with other celebrities, like “Full House” star Jodie Sweetin, the petition caught the attention of Drew Carey, who immediately shared it on Twitter.
“Please sign this petition and chip in if you can.
Thank you and bless you,” the “Price Is Right” host wrote to fans.
As we reported, “Price Is Right” tapings were cancelled for the week and Carey released an emotional statement regarding Dr. Harwick’s murder.
“Amie and I had a love that people are lucky to have once in a lifetime. She was a positive force in the world, a tireless and unapologetic champion for women, and passionate about her work as a therapist. I am overcome with grief. I would like to thank you in advance for giving myself and everyone who loved Amie privacy while we try to work through this tragic situation.”
