Affleck mentioned that he was not a stranger to drinking. He had been drinking in relative moderation for a lot of years. Yet, in the last few years of his marriage, he got to the point where he was actually dealing with a full-blown alcoholism issue.

He mentioned, "I drank relatively normally for a long time. What happened was that I started drinking more and more when my marriage was falling apart. This was 2015, 2016. My drinking, of course, created more marital problems.”

Ben's relationship with ex-Jennifer Garner is not in the worst terms. Yet, it has been tough on the family dealing with most of Ben's issues. Late last year Ben was seen at Garner's home a day after he was also spotted publically intoxicated at a Halloween party.

At the time Affleck did admit to the relapse. He said, "It happens, but I am not going to let it derail me." It is probably safe to say though, Garnder was not all that pleased at the time.

Feeling Shame

One of the common themes that Affleck talks about is feeling ashamed about his actions. Then how actually that feeling of shame led him deeper into alcohol and other poor decisions. Instead of being able to actually use that feeling as a launching path. As they say sometimes you just have to hit rock bottom.

On shame, he mentioned, "Shame is really toxic. There is no positive byproduct of shame. It’s just stewing in a toxic, hideous feeling of low self-worth and self-loathing.”

To get back on track Affleck has thrown himself into his work. The next movie that he is going to star in is going to combine his well-known love of basketball. With a story that is pretty reminiscent of his current life situation.

The Way Back is a movie about a former basketball player with a ton of life issues that basically gets a second chance at life in the form of coaching a high school basketball team. We are probably going to get a chance to see real emotion for Affleck in this film.
