The post, which she paired with a powerful video, read, “I will not be ashamed.

While many perceived the message as Dawson’s “coming out”, the actress recently talked with “Bustle” and clarified that that was not the case.
People kept saying that I [came out]… I didn’t do that,” she told the outlet. “I mean, it’s not inaccurate, but I never did come out come out. I mean, I guess I am now.”
While Dawson did play a lesbian character on the hit show “Jane the Virgin”, she herself has never fully identified as a a lesbian.
In attempt at clarifying her attraction to women, Dawson explained, “I’ve never had a relationship in that space, so it’s never felt like an authentic calling to me.”
Currently, the actress is dating Senator Cory Booker. The pair began dating in 2019. While dating a politician can always be “risky business”, Dawson is well aware of the delicacy of their relationship.
“It’s the first time I felt like I had to be responsible about my choice of love, which is a challenging thing to do,” she said.
She continued with, “If you fall in love, you fall in love. But there’s another aspect I had to consider: what this meant in [putting] a microscope on my family and particularly on my daughter.”
Her daughter Isabella, is 17 years old. Dawson adopted her back in 2014.
Though Booker recently withdrew from the presidential race, where he was running as a Democratic candidate, Dawson and his relationship appears to be stronger than ever. According to Dawson, “…in each other I think we found our person.”
In January, Dawson took to social media to gush over her romance, writing, “My love, I’m always impressed with how you exude such grace and civility while expressing your passion and brilliance in response to these tumultuous times. I’m so grateful for your voice and dedication. Your love lifts us all up. Thank you. You and your team continue to grow humanity and build community daily, giving me faith that indeed We Will Rise. I see you. I love you!”
