NASCAR's biggest event of the year ended in horrifying fashion on Monday evening when driver Ryan Newman crashed on the final lap of the race. His car went headfirst into the wall before being sent flipping through the air.

Afterward, he was seen being pulled from the upside down vehicle and put into an ambulance.

NASCAR issued a statement on Monday night to confirm that Newman did survive, but he is in serious condition.

"Ryan Newman is being treated at Halifax Medical Center. He is in serious condition, but doctors have indicated his injuries are not life threatening," the statement read. "We appreciate your thoughts and prayers and ask that you respect the privacy of Ryan and his family during this time. We appreciate your patience and cooperation and we will provide more information as it becomes available."

Many of Newman's fellow drivers took to social media to offer their thoughts on prayers.

"I’m praying with everyone else for my buddy Ryan Newman," Jimmy Johnson, who ran his final Daytona 500 on Monday, wrote.

"First a foremost I want to give well wishes and prayers to Ryan Newman," wrote Denny Hamlin, who won the race. "I had absolutely NO IDEA of the severity of the crash until I got to victory lane. There’s very little communication after the finish and i had already unhooked my radio. It’s not anyone’s fault."

"This shit is real," wrote Clint Bowyer. "We’re all on the road together doing what we love. Please let Ryan Newman be ok here."

"Big prayers for Newman," Dale Earnhardt Jr. wrote. His father died 19 years ago today in a crash that was also on the final lap of the Daytona 500.

Many fans were quick to note the similarities between the two wrecks.

"As Ryan Newman continues to be on the minds of many, today eerily marks 19 years since Dale Earnhardt died in the final lap at Daytona. Even a full decade after he died, those words are painful to process. Many are praying for a healthy recovery for Ryan Newman," one person wrote.

"If you watched the NASCAR race last night and watched the race 19 years ago there is NO WAY you did not have similar feelings. I guess you can say that Ryan Newman is alive because of the dedication to safety since the Dale Earnhardt accident. [Prayers] to all affected," another wrote.

"Because of the safety changes made after we lost Dale 19 years ago today, Ryan Newman will survive the worst crash ever today. Pray we have more good news about Ryan tomorrow, as his injuries are serious," someone else added.
