Constance Wu has been making all of the right moves in terms of her acting career. She began gaining attention for her role on the TV sitcom Fresh Off The Boat in 2015 and then put asians back on the map with her lead role in Crazy Rich Asians in 2018. To add momentum to her success, she starred in the 2019 hit movie, Hustlers alongside co-star Jennifer Lopez.
And Wu made an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show Monday and dished some shocking stories about preparing for her role in Hustlers. Wu revealed that she stripped undercover while attempting to do research on her role in the movie, and even made $600!
And it seemed like her research and preparation paid off be cause Hustlers was a big hit at the box office bringing in over $157 Million last year.
“I did work at a strip club to get ready for Hustlers. I went undercover. I gave lap dances to strangers,” Wu told Kelly Clarkson who couldn’t believe what she was hearing.
“I’m not lying! I made $600 my friend,” Wu said. “I am not being funny, and it was not funny. I put fake tattoos on my neck, changed my hair. You can’t duplicate the first time you walk into a club and say, ‘Hey, I’d like to have a job here,’ and then you go work that night.”
The film, Hustlers, was actually lightly based off of a true story. It was written and directed by Lorene Scafaria, and was based on an article by Jessica Pressler’s who writes for New York Magazine.
The original article was about the true story of a group of strippers who scammed rich men by drugging them and running up their credit cards after the 2008 financial crisis.
Wu played the role of Dorothy, a stripper who was strugging to support herself and her child as a single mother. That is until she met Ramona (Lopez), who was a veteran in the stripping business and the two teamed up to start their devious scheme.
Last year, Wu mentioned in an interview with Vulture, that visiting strip clubs in San Francisco was part of her research for the film. She also placed a dancing pole in her living room and took legitimate dancing classes to prepare.
“I installed a pole in my living room,” she explained. “I took pole classes; I took private coaching sessions. And this was all stuff I paid for by myself before we even started the movie.”
“I became friends with a couple of strippers,” Wu continued. “I went to a lot of strip clubs in San Francisco. That’s what I spent my Christmas Eve doing. I went with two of my guy friends, and we went to five different clubs. It was so fun. And nobody knew who I was. I’m not really that famous. Also nobody expects this sitcom mother of three boys to be in a strip club.”
Wu added that she hasn’t even seen the film after its release!
The star revealed on Live with Kelly and Ryan, “It was watching that movie[Crazy Rich Asians], after that experience, that I stopped watching anything. I didn’t watch my talk show appearances or Fresh Off the Boat or Hustlers… Just because I thought, you know, I want to focus on the present and not be self-critical and think too much, dwell too much on the past.”
Although the actress herself hasn’t seen her own recent works, the fans can definitely assure her that she has been doing a fantastic job and seems to be on a roll with her acting career.
