Netflix dropped the first season of Locke & Key on February 7th. Overall, the show seems to be getting a good reception, along with a lot of social media attention. The series is based on the graphic novel series of the same name by Joe Hill (Stephen King’s son) and Gabriel Rodriguez and follows a family recovering from a traumatic event who move across the country into a mysterious old house filled with keys that go to doors that have magical properties.
There is a good potential for Netflix to grant a second season to Locke & Key. There is also a good chance that the streaming subscription service’s decision to do so could come soon. Carlton Cuse, one of the show’s executive producers, told Collider that so far, the signs that it will get a second season seem promising:
“Although Netflix has not picked up Season 2 (at the time this interview was conducted in January 2020), and their policy is not to do that until they have 30 days of data on the show, they have paid for a writers’ room.”
Cuse also mentioned that the writers for Locke & Key are already working on the second season. Surely, they wouldn’t do so if they didn’t feel confident that the series would get picked up for another round, right? He said:
“We’re in the middle of writing Season 2, so we’re optimistic and hopeful that we’re gonna get a chance to make Season 2. We very much know what it is because Meredith and I are in the middle of overseeing the writers’ room and we’re working on that right now.”
Please note that there are spoilers ahead:
At the end of the first season of Locke & Key, the kids seem to think that they’ve officially gotten rid of Dodge, but it’s later revealed that the Dodge they think they banished was actually Ellie. Cuse told TV Guide that this is a plot point the second season will get back to. Season 2 will also explore more different kinds of keys, as well as clarify what some of the other keys do. Finally, season 2 will explore more of the history of Key House.
Also, being that the show is based on a graphic novel, there is still a lot of material it can cover from its source material.
So if Netflix does announce a second season for Locke & Key, when can fans expect it to go up on the streaming service? It’s hard to say and there are a lot of factors that will end up affecting that decision. Netflix should have enough data gathered by next month and an announcement about season 2 could be expected then. Given that writing for season 2 is already underway, it’s likely a second season could premiere in early 2021.
