Netflix has become the champion of bringing us new, original content that is nearly flawless. With the additions of The End of the F*cking World and Stranger Things, Netflix’s step into the awkward teenage realm is near complete.
A few months ago, Netflix brought us Raising Dion, a show about a child with developing super powers and his mother who had to learn how to deal with it.
All that to say, Netflix is no stranger to superhero and awkward teenagers. I Am Not Okay With This brings those two sections together.
Sydney, a “boring 17-year old white girl” as she states in the trailer, is the protagonist of this story. Sydney is played by Sophia Ellis (Gretel & Hansel, It).
Netflix lists the show’s description as,
“Angsty Syd navigates high school awkwardness, family drama and an unrequited crush on her best friend while trying to rein in her budding superpowers.”
The show also features Wyatt Oleff, Sofia Bryant, Kathleen Rose Perkins, Aidan Wojtak-Hissong, Richard Ellis, and more.
It’s produced by the same people who brought us Stranger Things, and directed by Jonathan Entwistle, who directed The End of the F*cking World
For a trailer, it seems like we’ve received a lot of information about what this season may be about. We’re introduced to all the key players, including Syd herself.
Syd is introduced as a clearly awkward, boring, white girl. She doesn’t seem to think much of herself. She’s attending what appears to be therapy, and being told to write in a diary to make herself feel better.
Stanley Barber (Oleff) plays her neighbor and friend. Although he seems a little strange, the two look like they get closer throughout the season.
Dina (Bryant) is Syd’s best friend, and the girl that she has an unrequited crush on. Though it doesn’t state that explicitly in the trailer, it can be found in the Netflix description. There’s also a quick moment where the two are seen laying in bed looking at each other.
Liam (Wotjak-Hissong) plays Dina’s boyfriend, who Syd has dubbed “the golden boy”. Clearly he’s going to get in the way of Syd’s feelings for Dina, or vise-versa if it ever goes there.
Surely this show will find success with such an all-star team behind it. The show’s director and producers have already worked on similar successful shows in the same vein, so it’s likely this one will be just as good. We can’t wait to see what this Netflix show brings to the table.
