In Grey’s Anatomy there is drama, and hopefully if you’ve been watching since the first season, you’re aware of the drama and can kind of see it coming… If not, well, that’s unfortunate but I guess you’re surprised all the time!
Did anybody expect a love triangle with Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone), Own Hunt (Kevin McKidd) and Atticus “Link” Lincoln (Chris Carmack)?! Because I didn’t see that one coming, woah.
It seems the triangle won’t be ending anytime soon, though. Amelia decided against a paternity test in Season 16, Episode 13. Who is the father of Amelia’s child?! And why didn’t she reveal the father of her baby?! Come on, Amelia!
In Grey’s Anatomy Season 16, the premiere which was titled: “Nothing Left to Cling To”, Amelia learns about her pregnancy after visiting with Carina DeLuca (Stefania Sampinato). At this point, Owen and Amelia have been broken up and she’s actively dating Link. Owen and Teddy, on the other hand, are getting ready to raise a child together! So why would she bother them with her pregnancy?
By the time the episode ends, the paternity is questioned. It’s clear that Amelia believes the father is Link, and when she tells Link that she’s pregnant he’s thrilled and ready to dive into being a parent.
However… in the fall finale, titled “Let’s All Go to the Bar”, Amelia gets an ultrasound and it turns out she’s twenty-four weeks pregnant rather than twenty. So… those four weeks mean it could be Owen’s! Oh, the drama.
Eventually she gathers the courage, and tells Link the truth. She doesn’t want to get a paternity test, because she wants to be with Link. And, at first, Link can appreciate that decision and is fine with it. But… then he reconsiders.
In episode thirteen, she puts her foot down. Link’s stressing out in the plant room, and she sends a text that reads: “I’m sorry, I didn’t run the test. I need time.”
Krista Vernoff steps in, and explains why Amelia does not want to reveal the father of her child, so let’s hear it from Vernoff:
“She is not going to play by anyone else’s rules,” Vernoff said. “And she is protecting her own heart and her own pregnancy and her own sanity at whatever cost.”
The showrunner added: “She is figuring out what it is on her own terms. This character has learned how to listen to her own body and she’s been through one very traumatic pregnancy. And the feelings that came up in her body were not feeling that she wants to navigate during this pregnancy. So she’s looking to take care of herself and her baby.”
Vernoff says that despite isolating herself in this moment, from Link, she [Amelia] has not isolated herself from her sisters: Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary). Vernoff also made sure to confirm that the father of the child will not be made clear for some time.
Grey’s fans have expressed their frustration over this plot, and now her storyline will drag out for weeks–specifically this storyline, but come on. That’s kind of the point. Sorry fans, this storyline will probably be worth waiting for.
