Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s decision to leave the royal family was in part because the couple wanted to find a way to create sustained happiness in their lives. Now, one royal source is suggesting that Harry has old wounds that have been making him unhappy for years.

According to the source, the trauma stems from the loss of Harry’s mother Princess Diana. Reporting in Page Six suggest that Harry has been in therapy for years trying to overcome that trauma.

In a speech at a JP Morgan summit that Harry and Meghan attended earlier this month, Harry discussed the lingering trauma of his mother’s death, and his and Meghan’s decision to leave the royal family.

“Harry also touched on Megxit. Saying while it has been very difficult on him and Meghan, he does not regret their decision to step down as senior royals because he wants to protect his family,” the source shared. Harry is so concerned about his family in part because of Diana.

“He does not want Meghan and their son Archie to go through what he did as a child,” the source said.

Tina Brown, a royal expert who wrote “The Diana Chronicles,” believes that Harry has been unhappy for some time.

“I think the deep wounds of his mother’s death have never healed. And his sense of his role as the second son, the fact that he loved his military career but then left and didn’t have that sense of purpose,” she told The New York Times.

Following the reporting around Harry’s unhappiness, he and Meghan Markle announced that they were planning to step back from their duties as members of the royal family. The decision came after Meghan faced incredible scrutiny from the British press, and received coverage that some have described as racist.

Since they made the decision to leave the royal family, reporting suggests that Meghan and Harry are happier than they were while they were in the family. If that’s the case, Harry may have made the right call.

Ultimately, Harry’s goal was to find a way to keep the pattern of critical press coverage that Harry watched play out with his mother from repeating itself. In giving his wife the chance to spend time away from the British press, he seems to have done just that.

The announcement initially caused a stir, in part because it came as a surprise to the queen. After the dust settled, though, it seems Harry and Meghan found a way to make the split work.
