It seems like we're living in the age of the reboot. All of the movies and shows we have the nostalgic feels for are getting a glow-up in one way or another. Some are getting sequels we never knew we wanted, while others are getting fancy remakes. Either way, it's clear that capitalizing on nostalgia is successful these days.

Which is why many are wondering if The Office is going to join the list of popular shows getting a reboot. Fans want it, and some cast members have said they're open to it. But will it happen? Here's what we know.

A Reboot or a Remake?

Lots of fans are on board for a new version of The Office, but there are major differences of opinion about how the show should make a comeback.

Some fans really want a new version with the original cast. This could take the form of a limited "where are they now" series, following up on the characters we all came to love on the show. Other fans really want a completely new version of The Office with a new cast.

The American version of the show was a completely new version of the UK version of the show with the same name. Though the ideas were the same, there was little overlap between the two shows.

So, a new American version with a new cast could do just as well.

And some fans are adamantly against any kind of reboot or remake, saying the show is perfect as it is.

In the fall of 2019, a top-level employee at NBC said that they wanted to bring some version of The Office back to the air by 2021. Bonnie Hammer, NBCUniversal's Chairman of Direct-to-Consumer and Digital Enterprises, said that NBC will get the rights for The Office back in January 2021 and she said that the network really wants to have a reboot idea ready to go by then.

NBC hasn't made any statements about what a reboot would entail, but they're definitely on board for something.

Steve Carell Doesn't Think It Would Work

When rumors started flying about a potential Office reboot, of course, everyone wanted to know what Steve Carell thought. Though he'd made comments about the potential for a reboot in the past, as of 2019, Carell wasn't optimistic.

He said that he didn't think The Office would work in the modern world. "I mean, the whole idea of that character, Michael Scott, so much of it was predicated on inappropriate behavior.... A lot of what is depicted on that show is completely wrong-minded. That's the point, you know? But I just don't know how that would fly now. There's a very high awareness of offensive things today—which is good, for sure," he said.

Michael Schur Says the Right People Need to be Involved

Michael Schur, a writer for the show and the actor who played Mose, has said that a reboot isn't totally out of the question. But he made it very clear that the right people would need to be involved for the reboot to be a success.

“I don’t think anyone would ever do that without Greg Daniels’ at least blessing, if not outright participation... If it’s not him, it would take an incredibly thoughtful and careful person to execute it properly. But I don’t know, we’ll see,” he said.

He also made it clear the Carell and the major cast members should be on board.

So, is there going to be an Office reboot anytime soon? It's not really clear. But we can keep dreaming.
