What Happened to Batfleck?

Ben Affleck was one of the best casting decisions to play the caped crusader back in 2016. We could all see that jawline under the mask and the outline of his jacked physique as he jumped from building to building. We were all imagining Affleck in the suit and fans couldn't wait to see him portray the millionaire playboy, Bruce Wayne. Now that we have Robert Pattinson as the next one to play Batman some may be asking that, what happened to Batfleck?

The First Appearance

The first time we saw Affleck as Bruce Wayne was in Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, where we saw Henry Cavill's Superman battle it out with Batfleck ultimately ending up in an on-screen team-up that comic book fans have wanted for decades. Generally, the film has mixed reactions, but people did enjoy the new portrayal of the older rugged Batman that we were promised. It was new territory for an on-screen Batman to act the way as Batfleck did, being a pseudo -villain for the first half of the film. Even if fans didn't enjoy the film, they were excited to see Affleck continue this new portrayal of Batman.

This was a team-up people dreamed would come to the big screen Zack Snyder's Justice League. Ben Affleck's Batman, Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman, Jason Mamoa's Aquaman, Ezra Miller's Flash, and Ray Fisher's Cyborg (later on in the film Cavill's Superman) were all coming together after the events of BvS. This film was a spotlight for Bruce Wayne because he was the main focal point to bring all these heroes together and revive Superman. After the film, Affleck was set to co-write, direct, and star in a solo Batman film, but unfortunately things didn't come to fruition.

Back in February 2019, the Affleck made an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live. During the interview which he admitted that he decided to step away from the DCEU and wouldn't be returning for a standalone Batman movie. Fans were devasted to hear this news as Affleck had shown great promise to do all three roles for a film and produce great results.

"I tried to direct a version of it and worked with a really good screenwriter, but just couldn’t come up with a version, I couldn’t crack it,” he told Jimmy. “So I thought it was time to let someone else take a shot at it. They got some really good people, so I’m excited.”

The Future For Batman

I think now that Batman's expectations aren't as high as when Affleck was in the role, there is no pressure for Pattinson's Batman. Fans weren't necessarily positive to hear that Pattinson was the new Batman, but I feel that he's going to be the next iconic on-screen Bruce Wayne. Pattinson has proven to be a top actor since his days in Twilight. Matt Reeves' The Batman is set to release in 2021 and I think it's safe to say that this Batman is going to something that we've never seen.
